R.I.P. Simon 2001 - 2013

R.I.P. Simon 2001 - 2013

Simon passed away this morning after a very short illness and brave fight with a nasty tumour in his pelvis. He was my friend, my faithful companion and confidant. He was only 12 but had a good life for the breed he was.

I never wanted a dog but our boys wanted one and since we were a newly blended family my wife and I thought that a dog would help with the transition with the children. We decided to find a dog to rescue rather than buy one and so we spent a number of weekends trying to find the right dog. We ended up driving up north to the outskirts of Bracebridge for an ad for a Shepherd/Lad cross pup that was house trained. What we didn't expect to find was the most flea-bitten mongrel that I have every seen. He had so many fleas you could see them jump. I didn't want him as soon as the farmer said he was the last pup left and that his home was the barn with his mother and if he spent a rare night in the farm house he was tied to the bannister and wasn't allowed free reign.

I was soon to be overruled as he played with our boys and then he jumped into the van and refused to come back out. My wife said he is choosing us and we are taking him home. So we did ... after a bath and delousing he soon became the most expensive free dog I have ever owned.

Simon soon became an integral part of our family but the promises of the boys to take care of him (walks, brushing, feeding, etc.) were soon forgotten and it suddenly became my duty to do. What I didn't know at the time was that this choice would soon save my life. Simon needed to be walked twice a day, every day for at least a mile or more and because the boys wouldn't do it or if they did they would cheat and just walk him around the block - I ended up walking him for the time and distance he needed. Because of this, I became active again and I was told a few years later this choice most likely saved me from a massive heart attack that would have been in my future had I continued on the path (or lack of path) I was on.

We had great times together, he was good and gentle with everyone he met (he never met a dog he couldn't be friends with) but on the other hand he was stubborn as **** and got himself into trouble more times that I wished. He never ran away and was always a faithful friend every day, lying at my feet while I worked and letting me know when it was walk time. Simon became even more important to me as the boys moved away from home for the start of their own lives, becoming my best friend as he was always there for me when I needed companionship or someone to talk to. Although not human, he knew what to do to make me feel better and never judged me.

Simon became my ehMac ID because I never wanted to use my real name when I joined and it was the only name that came to mind when I was setting up my account. Some of my fellow ehMacr's have even met him over the years if they came to my home to pick up the various things I have sold through ehMac.

Sorry for the long-winded post but I miss my friend thanks for listening.

Jay

Dogs are simply special. For Simon's memory and your own sake, don't wait too long to invite another canine friend into your life.

Truly sorry to hear of your loss, simon. I have gone down that road many times with five of our dogs, and it never gets any easier. Still, you have your memories, and those loving thoughts will be with you always. Paix, mon ami.

We still have a dog left, his name is Odie. We "rescued" Odie 5 years ago from my wife's daughter who was unable to care for him anymore. Although they were exact opposites in a number of areas such as colour, size, breed and personality, they were the best of friends and supported each other in many ways. Odie was the mouthpiece and Simon was the muscle to back it up. Odie taught Simon to howl and Odie stole food from Simon's bowl. Odie would even attack Simon when he was angry but Simon, not even once, growled or put Odie in his place even though if he did that would have been the end of the little guy.

I made sure that Odie had his closure too, letting him come to Simon after his passing. Odie will miss his friend too.

Thank you all for your condolences and best wishes

Sorry to hear of your loss of Simon, Jay. Dogs can make wonderful companions.

Your ehmac ID will now become a nice homage to your dear faithful friend and companion.

My condolences to you and your family. A dog becomes an integral part of the family and it is gut wrenching to lose them. I had to put down my golden lab retriever two years ago and it still hurts.
