Man, only in the states you can do citizen's arrest..
My dad about 30 yrs ago, fended off a would be thief that broke into our place and attacked us.. My dad educated the guy, cops show up and arrest my dad.. LOL [after the court case - the charges were dropped but still insanely stupid cops here. ]

I wish Canada in that aspect would be more the like the new yorkers - stand up for your fellow man/female.

Actually this has changed/is changing in Canada. One advantage to a right wing gov't I suppose.

If i'm recalling details correctly: you can apprehend. You can defend yourself. You can make a citizens arrest. You can even hit first if you believe yourself to be threatened with mortal danger. However you cannot use an object in a preemptive strike nor can you use excessive violence disproportionate to the perceived threat. You think someone is about to mug you and you hit them with your car you will be going to court.

Pretty sure if the same thing we're to happen today a lawyer would having little difficulty defending your actions.
