"Oh the humanity!!!"

On May 6, 1937, the largest hydrogen airship ever built began to prepare for a landing near Lakehurst, New Jersey -- but bad weather rolled in and forced the Hindenburg to remain in the air for several hours.

When it finally began its descent there was a flash of light, and the Hindenburg burst into flames.

Thirty-six people were killed.

The radio commentator was fired, I believe, for this display of emotion on-air.

Dr. G., according to WIKI, you will be happy to know that is an urban legend and did not occur:

Quote:
An urban legend has it that Morrison was fired by WLS for his emotional reaction, but according to the station's weekly magazine and Morrison himself, this is not true. In fact, he was highly praised by station management, and the story of how he and Nehlsen made the recording was described in detail. It is possible that the story of him being fired came about because Morrison left WLS a year later to work for the Mutual Broadcasting System and that network's New York flagship station, WOR.

Sadly I now related the phrase "Oh the humanity" instantly with "Les Nesman and WKRP's Thanksgiving Day on site promotion" TV episode.

It's my reaction as opposed to the reaction of Chimpur.

I don't mean to be irreverent to this disaster, it's just my brains first thought when I read or hear the phrase. Again I apologize for the derailment.
