I've been active on Kiva.org since January, 2008. Kiva.org lets you lend money to a specific entrepreneurs in the developing world - empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty.

I've created a new ehMac Kiva Team in which I'm hoping many ehMac members will join and loan money to help change lives.

To start the group off and to really kick things into gear, I've loaned $1,250 US to about 45 different entrepreneurs. You can view their individual profiles here.

Let's see if we can hit $2000 loaned by the end of tomorrow. :)

Kiva Partners With Visa To Expand Micro-Loans To U.S. Small Businesses

Last year, Kiva.org, one of the pioneers in micro-lending to international entrepreneurs, opened up its service to needy U.S. entrepreneurs, which caused some controversy. Since then, Kiva has facilitated more than $1 million in loans to U.S. small businesses. The new market has steadily gained its supporters, and today Kiva is launching a new partnership with Visa, who has contributed $1 million for a new fund that will issue loans to small business owners in the U.S.

Kiva - Kiva chosen as one of Oprah's Favorite Things of 2010!

Here's the important bit:

This weekend, new Kiva users can go to Groupon.com/kiva to buy $25 of Kiva credit for $15. If you've never made a loan on Kiva, and are interested in figuring out what all the fuss is about, this is the perfect deal for you. If you're trying to figure out what the perfect gift is this Holiday season... then this gift is for you. If you need to bring something to Thanksgiving to impress your in-laws, then this gift is definitely for you.

Free Free Free

Hey all, KIVA just announced a new recruitment promotion whereby, 4000 new members will be given the opportunity to try out being a $25 KIVA loan giver at no cost or risk.

I know there is considerable interest in these free loans as KIVA's website is already bogged down. The promotion ends August 13, but the 4000 free opportunities are not likely to last longer than a day or so at the rate they are declining.

In the interest of full disclosure, recruiters attracting enough new members will be gifted with KIVA branded clothing, which, also truthfully, I am not that interested in.

I looked for a "team" recruitment URL, but there doesn't seem to be one. Mayor/ Team Leader?

In the meantime: here is my own recruitment URL for any who are interested:

http://kiva.org/invitedby/kc3029

When the "free" loans are repaid, they of course, will be repaid to KIVA. At that point KIVA is hoping that you will have enjoyed the experience so much, you'll try a loan of your own money.

Come join the ehMac team for free!

Hey CM, I just reread your last word... Loans of our own money are not donations (unless you specifically designate them as such)..the loans are repaid to the loaners account. Then the loaner has the option of withdrawing his or her funds from their KIVA account or re-loaning it.

I keep loaning the same money over and over.
