: What can I do with an old iPhone?
satchmo Apr 6th, 2012, 10:53 PM I have an 'old' iPhone 3g which is probably worth $50 at most...not worth selling.
Just wondering how others have put older iPhones to use.
Maybe as a remote and keyboard input device for AppleTV?
Any other ideas?
fjnmusic Apr 6th, 2012, 11:27 PM Works great as an iPod Touch over WiFi. We have an iPod Touch 1G and an old iPhone 3GS (sim card removed) that both work great around the home and as portable devices. The Remote app is also well worth it. :)
(( p g )) Apr 7th, 2012, 02:15 PM I've kept my very old first-gen iPhone for a few of the reasons mentioned, but also because it's a backup phone in the event that I drop my newer iPhone or that it has to go in for repairs. I don't use a landline anymore so it's important to have some kind of backup system.

A 3G would make a nice paperweight.
tdu Apr 7th, 2012, 02:33 PM I'd actually buy one if I came across one for cheap. I have a bluetooth speaker in my living room, and I'd use it as a tuner for running Tunein radio rather than using my main iPhone, or one of the computers. If it's fast enough to run Pulse Newsreader, I'd use it for that as well. Apple TV remote is another good idea as you mentioned.

Nice. You know that all the electronic components save for the phone part still work right? You can even text with iMessage. My daughter uses my old iPhone and it was much less expensive than buying a new iPod Touch.

Sure, it works. But it's infuriatingly slow.
Andrew Pratt Apr 7th, 2012, 03:27 PM I'd use it as a touch. Or as a remote for logitechs harmony link system.

Fair enough. It does work well as an iPod or with the Remote app though, so still, better than a paperweight.
HowEver Apr 7th, 2012, 04:23 PM What condition is it in? How many GB? How's the battery life?
I'm interested at $50. Where are you located?

$50? Try $100-130 (if it's 8GB), that's what they are selling for on Craigslist and Kijiji at the moment (at least locally to me).
satchmo Apr 7th, 2012, 07:53 PM It's in great condition, 8gb, decent battery life, but I'm not selling it for $50! :)
I've posted it for sale in the past (not here) for $125 and all I got were low ball replies offering $50.

fjnmusic Apr 7th, 2012, 11:05 PM You can get a 3GS for free with a contract through Rogers. I'd say $50 is a pretty good offer, far better than zero.
chas_m Apr 8th, 2012, 12:33 AM I've kept my unlocked original iPhone (first day of issue, got it in the US) and I use it as my US phone when I'm in the states. I throw $100 at AT&T more or less annually, and they give unlimited calling and texting in the US for $3/day on days i use it (deducted from that $100 credit). Since I'm in the states fairly often for short visits, works great.
Might be giving that up now thanks to iMessage/FaceTime, though ... so many of my US contacts have iPhones, just unbelievable.
I will always keep this original iPhone (currently running Whited00r to make it "look" and "act" a bit more like iOS 5, even though it is actually running iOS 3.1.3, which is as high as it can go. I'm amazed at how many apps still support 3.1.3, none of the hot new things do but most of the old standbys and classics are still there and functioning.
I don't find it that slow because I don't attempt to do anything intensive on it. Still a very fine phone and basic-app machine, and probably the best $500 value I ever sank into tech in my life.
HowEver Apr 8th, 2012, 01:32 AM If you have to pay for something for 3 years, it's not free, but I get what you mean.

vancouverdave Apr 8th, 2012, 02:20 AM Downgrade it to iOS 3.1.3 and keep using it (contract free).
