I love the app "camouflage"...I hate icons on my desktop.. But sometimes, when I'm working on a project, I put lots on my desktop, for quick access... Camo allows you to hide the icons with a keystroke.. So you can hide them.

I also use bootxchanger to change the startup icon from the plain grey one.

the apps use to change my dock is called dock library.. Lots of great themes you can download!

I have to admit that I prefer to have my dock transparent, I like the icons just floating on the edge of my desktop.

I use CandyBar (http://www.panic.com/candybar/) 3 to customize the look of my Mac and have for several years. I hate the default folders in OSX since Leopard. I custom made my own folder in conjunction with some other icons that are available at InterfaceLIFT (http://interfacelift.com/icons/downloads/date/any/), a great site to get free icons themes and wallpapers.

Here are custom system folder's that I made and use... literally no one elses OSX looks exactly like mine.

I use one from a series at InterfaceLIFT called "Think Different"... Stamps made form famous photos of great artists, scientists, politicians etc.

Here is the one I am currently using:

About all I do is change the desktop 'picture' once in a while. I keep the dock in view, but reduced in size, and to the right side on my iMac (27" screen) - love to see all that 'real-estate' in view, unobstructed, and ready to use!!
And everytime I look at it, I find it "awesome"!!

Does using Growl count? I like using it so I can see whats going on in different apps.

The stamp thing sounds cool; I honestly never knew that anyone changed it!

I'd really like to get the overall feel back of Tiger or Leopard. i hate the plain grey icons in finder windows.

Me too! Small dock on the Right and just the Hard Drive icon on the desktop! And even the Dock only has Finder, Mail, Applications, Documents and Trashcan! Everything ese is launched from Spotlight.

This is an interesting thread. I've honestly never changed anything.

I used to change themes in Windows alot, but then I would get frustrated at having to do it over after a re-wipe, re-install etc..etc..

BUT, I guess I really don't have to do that much anymore

I just keep a supply of HD desktops in a folder that changes every 15 minutes. Looks pretty cool with an external monitor hooked up, plus a different background appears for each desktop, making it easier to tell them apart.

I also changed the icons for my drives as well so it was more obvious which is the SSD and which is the old platter drive. As for the dock it auto hides and gets out of the way. I do that in XP as well.

I keep a full auto hide dock on the left, use 6 Lion desktops for different types of work (each with different background). I use the Desktop folder far more in Mac OS than I ever did in Windows: Very convenient to park files there temporarily. I don't leave them there so it is pretty clean. I am gradually using Alfred more and more, especially to launch apps. After a year in Apple, I still find it easier to work in Mac OS (XP at work so I am constantly comparing). I tend to avoid using third party software to customize because it clutters the system, and no guarantee the developer will maintain it long term.

I, too, would love a Canadian stamp icon for mail.

The only mod I do really is I change the icons for my hard drive and all external drives and my main thumb drives. Just so I can tell them apart quickly if several are plugged in.

I've looked for a decent Canadian stamp icon and have only found really ugly ones so far. Do you know where I can get a good one?

I've always used this one:
Hawk Wings » Blog Archive » Mail stamp icons for Canada (http://www.hawkwings.net/2007/03/08/mail-stamp-icons-for-canada/)

And here's an up to date version!:

I change the stamp. Instructions are here: Hawk Wings » Blog Archive » Changing Snow Leopard’s Mail Icon (http://www.hawkwings.net/2009/10/26/changing-snow-leopards-mail-icon/). Works in lion too. There are many stamp icons on HawkWings (http://www.hawkwings.net)

I like this one which is an image of Canada's first stamp. ICNS file here (http://www.hawkwings.net/files/CanadasOldSchoolStampicon.icns.zip).
23696

I like to have the stacks in the Dock in list form so that they act like menus.

I also do the Terminal mod (http://sundog.ca/blog/?p=6) to make icons of hidden apps semi-transparent.

My desktop reflects my latest photo escapades.

That's about it.

Nice post!! I think the hidden icons mask will be useful, I don't tend to hide apps just because there's no clear indication it's hidden vs. having no windows open.

Shall I continue with ppls siggys?

Why is it that everyone is allowed to have a signature, and no one complains about it, but they bother me about mine.. My signature has helped a lot of people discover tapatalk, thus my signature is actually useful whiles yours is just whoring out your website.. Or tries to impress me by telling me of all the money you've spent on toys.

I'm not sure.. I know that when typing a message the signature isn't there.. But if I edit a post, it shows up as text.. So tapatalk must add it as text during the posting process.

I will say that I love how I don't see anyones signature when I use tapatalk. Some people seem to think I want to know everything about them, so they tell their whole life story in their signature.. Some of them take up so much space... But yet, people complain about mine.. Which is 6 words.. A simple line... But yet they are allowed to have a 10 line signature... Go figure..

Joking aside I get you're point. Why can some do a thing and others not a similar thing and say its wrong. Double standards. Though perhaps everyone would be best to agree to step back and not let such trivial matters upset them so.

It was intensional.. I didn't want people to get to jealous of all the toys I own... Just most of them!!!

Glad you get my point.. It's just been bugging me lately, because lots of people have been complaining about my signature... But its ok for them to have a mile long one... Petty frustrating.. Especially when I know that probably 95% of people don't even read their sigs, but I know they read mine, because many people have said to me "thanks.. Due to your signature, I learned about tapatalk for the first time today, and I'm loving it"... Thus, my "oh so annoying" 6 word signature, actually is beneficial, while everyone else's is just tooting their own horn

I agree that many of the signatures are way too big. I can deal with a "Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk" but people like spiffychristian or G-Mo seem to have a desire to make their signatures longer than their posts. spiffychristian's specifically is really overdone.

IMO anything more than 2-3 lines is more than anyone should be allowed.

Follow up..mi downloaded tapatalk HD today.. And the sig shows up right away when you make a new post.. Not after suing the publish process...

Oh... And tapatalk hd.. Not worth the upgrade.. I actually like the non-hd one better... They cram too much in on the screen in the hd version... Making it annoying to try and read long messages and you can't host messages directly in the app... (just noticed this)... I'm going back to non-hd...

Your signature is 12 lines long...

Ever think of putting a - or something between them and stretching them out horizontally? As it stands right now your signature is an intrusive space hog but you're clearly oblivious to very obvious things. You're either senseless or being purposely intrusive. Both are bad traits.

No double standard here at all: I like that I see no signatures when using Tapatalk. Yours is the only one I see because Tapatalk is appending text. So yours sticks out and becomes annoying when it's the only one.

Again, I have no problem with signatures at all when using the web. So I'm not singling you out for having a signature. I am singling you out because yours is the only one that shows up when using apps like Tapatalk. And would guess it would show up if someone disabled signatures on the web, too, since it's not actually a signature - it is appended text.

Thanks for reminding me I needed to work in my signature, I went 2000 posts without one, and just recently threw some of my certifications and machines in there in a diminished font. I have edited down to the 4 line requirement common in most forums.

chrisburke, you don't have a signature, if you did it wouldn't be an issue. Instead, tapatalk is appending that tag line to the end of every post text. If it was a proper signature, below the line, it wouldn't be an issue. Instead it's some bastardized hybrid, neither post content nor signature. Since tapatalk appears not able to append as a signature properly, it might be wise to disable the feature and contact the developer to see about them implementing it properly.

Or not... I'm content with it the way it is. Even as a line of text it's no where near as obtrusive as people's signatures.. So.. Just because I can.. I'll be keeping it...

I've alway been mostly a default type of person, sometimes I change a few icons, I don't use the 3D dock and I use the Bowtie app but aside from that, I don't have any really sweet apps or menubar apps either to improve functionality or do awesome things, or just anything cool and/or awesome.

Sometimes I see screenshots with awesome desktop things going on (I tried to use GeekTool once and then gave up)

So I was just wondering what do you guys do with your Mac? Keep it default or find cool things?

Maybe we can spark some inspiration to customize a bit on this forum ;)
