Check the Apple Refurb store daily. They sometimes have the 16gb wi-fi iPad 2 for $369 plus tax. One year warranty from Apple and free shipping.

Nothing there yesterday, so I guess I'll keep a close eye on the page over the next couple of weeks.

I'd talk to the parents about the iPad having a camera. I know a lot of parents are hesitant about children having internet connected cameras these days, especially one that's so ultra portable. I've never played with parental controls in my iPad, so, I'm not sure if you can block apps and activities that would allow a 9 year old to get video chatting unsupervised. If it's a concern, a lot of people are selling iPad 1s at the moment...

Thanks, it is an excellent point. I mentioned to the parents yesterday that I was specifically looking for an iPad 2 for the camera, and they didn't have any reservations.

I personally am of the mind that it's better to educate than to shelter, and better that she learn lessons now at 9 instead of at 15 or 16, but you're right, it's not my kid.

The parents don't seem to have a problem with it, though, and there do seem to be lots of ipad 1's available. So I'll give it a couple of weeks and see if something comes through before deciding whether to settle.
