Still trying to get this all figured out..new to iPad.

I have the latest version 32g/4g and I can't text from it. Up until I got the iPad I have been texting using my 3g iPhone, but now using the iPad any contact I find to text comes up with an error. Name is outlined in red with a red exclamation mark with an explanation this contact not registered in iMessage.

I have no idea what's happening but I would sure like to get this resolved soon.

You can only text people from an iPad who are also on an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad using iOS 5.0 or later -- you cannot text to cellphones from an iPad (correct me if I'm wrong?). Those devices also need to be connected to WiFi unless they have a cell signal (i.e; iPhone or iPad that has 3G or 4G). Is this the case with the people you're trying to message from your iPad?

All my contacts use cell phones, only family are on iPods/iPhones/iPads.


So just to understand better...if I use my iPad to contact anyone with another iPad lets say across the city and outside of my local Wi-Fi hotspot, I will be charged additional cellular fees from my carrier?

No. iOS 5 iMessage to iOS 5 iMessage is always free, anywhere in the world. But you can't text from your iPad to cellphone users, so there's your problem.

In my settings should I leave the 'Cellular' tab On or OFF. I have the sim card and data plan if this has any bearing?

No bearing. Cellular data for an iPad is just that - for data. It doesn't allow you to place calls, take calls or send/receive texts like a cellphone would. Data only.

If you are with Rogers you can do as you wish using RogersOneNumber. I text to Sasktel units with both the ipad and my mac mini.

There are several apps that will allow you to text any other cell users. They may require the apps also: Skype, What's App, Talkatone just to mention a few. There are dozens that may solve the issue of texting a phone for you, Skype being the most popular solution, probably, although fees may apply.

In the case of "txt"ing with an iPad, you need data on when no wifi is available. You have to have a data plan or wifi access in order to use your data link to send a "txt". It's not "txt" in the traditional sense as it isn't using the cell companies "txt" services on the iPad end.

iMessage on an iPad does not use "txt" services, just data being sent in a "txt"-like fashion.

As mentioned by others, there are apps that can send "txt" messages to "txt" using cell phones but you will need data to use them when you aren't in wifi.
