: New SSD is crap

I bought a new OCZ Agility SSD to install in my 2.7 i7 MBP and have had nothing but problems trying to get this piece of crap to accept an OS. I tried what I normally do and that is to install it in a firewire external and use the disc utility software to restore it. Ok Lion says I need to use the resort portion of my hard drive, restart and try that. It says that my new SSD will not accept a restore area and says to restart and try again. I tried yanking the old drive from my MBP and direct installing the SSd into the laptop and clean install. Still same message that the SSD will not accept a recovery partition and to restart and try again.

OK those who are thinking why doesn't he just use CCC? well tried that next and got this

please tell me what I am doing wrong because I am about to go outside and test this new SSD to see how it is as a wheel chock for my truck.

Hi there,

Just to cover bases, but did you set a single partition on the SSD first before trying an install? I faintly remember a slightly different step in setting up my SSDs, but I can't remember exactly (sorry!)...something tells me it was along that line.

I was also wondering if there might be a firmware update needed for that particular drive? I'd doublecheck that.

good luck!

+1. check the FW.

unfortunately OCZ SSD's are a bit of a pain to update the FW on.

Ok, I screwed up, I tried using an old outdated version of CCC, and yes there was only one partition on it, which I found out after downloading and using the newest version of CCC, tried the whole clone process again and I am posting this on my SSD still in the firewire case, It just finished cloning and I will soon shut down and transfer the SSD into my MBP. Thanks guys.

I didn't realize they were that fast, I haven't had a chance to really test it out as I have just been doing office work, maybe throw a game on and check it out.
Final specks for this 13" 2011 MBP is 2.7 i7 processor with 8G of 1333Mhz Mushkin Ram and the 180G OCZ Agility data 3 (6gb/s) SSD.

Happy camper.

As you discovered for Lion 10.7.x use, you need Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.4 as a minimum for proper cloning use and BTW, he has a 3.4.5-b1 available with some tweaks added.

Probably easily available vic CCC check for updates.

Just saying...

yep, had to download the newest 3.4.4 and it worked like a charm. I have been working with the new drive since yesterday and even just waking up is almost instant to having wifi and mouse control

Have you tried running Mac App Store - Blackmagic Disk Speed Test (http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/blackmagic-disk-speed-test/id425264550?mt=12) on the Agility yet? I choose the Crucial M4 instead due to most reviews reporting the OCZ Agility 3 doesn't come close to the "up to 500Mb/s" speed advertised (averaging about 180Mb/s instead). Also read there were overwhelmingly high failure rates with the OCZ that were not fixed, as promised, by the latest firmware.

knowing that the speed is not as advertised is not a concerned nor was, the little tidbit about high failure rate is received with mixed emotion. Thanks for the forewarning but at the same time now I am worried about at what point will it die? It does have a three year warranty but...

The speed was more for my interest, I've read about other people's drive speed results (mostly on PCs) with that drive, and was just interested in "seeing" another result (especially in almost the same machine as one of mine).

Black Magic uses uncompressed data so its benchmarks should give you about 180 as the max...that's perfectly normal. To hit the 500 figures you need a benchmark that uses compressible data...basically its just a different way of measuring and will always give you inflated values compared to more real world testing methods like black magic's test.

I used Blackmagic on my Crucial M4 and got over 500Mb/s.

Which version of black magic? They changed the code recently.

Blackmagic's real world testing methods are perfectly normal, until they are not. Lol

Using the same version linked to earlier, the most recent via Mac App Store.

AS SSD Benchmark, a popular tool over at overclock.net (and amongst PC drive speed testers) reports similar results as Blackmagic for the M4 (508/259 r/w), and reports 176/138 r/w for the Agility...

Thanks for some of the posts and they got me to get to some of my "Round Tuits" and maybe a bit OT here but anyway...

Last year the HD in my mid-2007 24" died in the middle of the day and without any forewarning, and I replaced it with a WD 1TB Black 7200RPM 3GB/s drive (the same as My iMac supports) and cloned my backup which I forgot was my 10.5.8 backup, so I created a new 500GB partition and cloned my 10.6.8 to the new partition which is my normal OS that I use.

Then I realized that it was now on the slower inner HD tracks and confirmed when using Blackmagic, that the best R/W was maybe 100MB/s at best. Testing the 10.5.8 partition with Blackmagic showed close to 140MB/s for R/W, a big difference.

But it seems odd that my WD HD is getting close to the reported speed of the OCZ Agility SSD drives. Hmmm...???

That reminds me of a local Mac acquaintance who was so proud of his new SSD and it's speed, and when I used his later iMac model than mine with his new SSD, it seemed like it was MUCH slower than my old setup. Maybe he got one of the slow SSD drives, and I believe he was running Lion as well which may have been an issue.

Anyway, my old iMac is running as fast as I need, but I also don't do or use high end processor/HD intensive use applications. And now it's faster than it was after doing all the switching and cloning to the faster partition.

So today I copied and zeroed out each partition and cloned (Disk Images) with CCC to get them installed and basically reverse where each OS and data had originally been installed. And thank God that I only had about 160GB to clone on the largest volume.

Things now seem to be a bit quicker and interestingly, Blackmagic now says I'm close to the 140MB/s R/W mark on the outer partition, which I gather is what Disk Utility shows as the upper partition, and the inner partition with a Blackmagic check still shows maybe 104MB/s R/W speed.

One 'Round Tuit" off my list and thanks for the reminder to get finally get Round Tuit. ;)
