Yes, there is a wealth of information out there and that is the problem. Can some one who is CURRENTLY using VOIP on their ipod explain the best set up?

I am not necessarily looking for a free service, I don't mind paying a bit (+/- $10/month) if it means better quality service and no ads. I want to have a local Vancouver number (604) and receive calls as well as be able to call land and mobile lines. I don't really travel, at least not outside of US/Canada, but would like free or cheap long-distance calling. Also I want to be able to send/receive text messages.

As I said, I know the service is out there, but what's the best service with least work arounds/goofy set ups. Looking for someone that's been there and done that to help a newbie out :baby:

Skype won't give you an incoming 604 number.

You might try the

Dell Voice app

for a free 604 number. Not sure about call quality or anything but it is the only one I can think of

You might need to set up a VOIP account & load appropriate software. I've used voip.ms with success, along with the Bria app. Both Canadian companies if that's important to you. Not for the faint-of-heart, but will get you what you want.

Text messaging would require a separate app.

Use Dell VoIP. You'll get a phone number and everything.

Does the Dell Voice app charge for making calls overseas? The write up in iTunes just says in Canada

It charges for calls to non-major Canadian cities and international. But incoming calls are free. It really is probably the best solution right now until skype gets canadian skypein numbers. (I am aware of workarounds, not really my style)

I love Dell Voice. It's free to major cities in Canada, and then worldwide it's about the same as Skype, starting from pennies a minute. Bonus is you get a phone number with voice mail and the works, unlimited incoming calling.
