Does anyone know how to active it? I don't see it anywhere?

Basically anywhere you can type where the keyboard pops up, you can click the microphone symbol and then start talking.

Dictation is turned on by default. There's a switch in the general settings to turn it on.

I think if you restored a backup it is off by default because I had to turn mine on manually in Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Dictation ON

Remember it only shows up if you have an internet connection also.

Mine was turned OFF by default, but maybe that's because I restored it from my iPad 1 backup (which would not have had dictation). Drove me NUTS for a couple of minutes till I figured out where they had hidden the ON switch ...

I'm not sure what the big fuss is about. I've been using Dragon Dictation on my iPad and iPhone for over a year now to make short posts and send emails. I rarely type anything on my iPhone anymore so this "new" feature is old hat to me on my iPad 2.

Now if they would only make the app work on my MBP, I could wear a headset and dictate posts like this one.

Does anyone know if there is a way to input punctuation during dictation?

Victor Borge invented a way to insert punctuation into dictation years ago. :D

Going from memory here, I believe you just state the punctuation you would like to use. If you need a . then say that. If you need a , just say that. I think that is how the demo went when the New iPad was released.

the difference is dictation is built into the os now for the new ipad, so it's system wide - meaning you can use it wherever you input type with the ipad keyboard, while with dragon dictation you must copy/paste if you wanted to use it in different apps, so thats a back & forth step thats now been made obsolete.

however for your mbp you can buy the dragon dictation app for your mac, but it's a bit expensive :

Nuance - Dragon for Mac - Dragon Speech Recognition Software for the Mac, MacSpeech Dictate solutions built from the ground up to ensure the ultimate dictation experience on Mac OS X (http://www.nuance.com/for-individuals/by-product/dragon-for-mac/index.htm)

hopefully apple will eventually port over the dictation feature into a future version of the mac os.

Hi Sinc,

Not sure if you have the iphone 4S, but I use Vocal to dictate on my macs.

Vocal for iPhone - Vocally control your Mac (http://mtrbts.me/vocal/#)

I'm sure this fellow will have an ipad ready solution soon. It might even work on the ipad - I haven't tried it yet.

Cheers,
Keebler

Has anyone noticed what the new iPad's mic quality is like? I've always found that my iPod Touchs' mic was better quality than my iPad 2.

Actually, when setting up a new iPad, you're given the option to enable or disable it during the on-device setup process. If you're restoring from backup, on the other hand, it will be disabled by default.
