FWIW, I have one Apple ID for MobileMe (now iCloud) and one for ADC/GSX/iTunes.

I upgraded the MobileMe one to iCloud, and didn't have any issues at all.

Guess it has to do with people who have more then two accounts and purchases split between them? Who knows.

I suspect so. As long as you aren't an idiot about it, and remember which is for which, there are very few things that can go wrong with multiple accounts.

What happens if one lets the Mobile Me ID (@me.com) expire. i.e. does not transition it to iCloud.

Will the ID expire?

How long until the email address (@me.com) is available for reacquisition?

I believe mobile me accounts will have to be transitioned by June 30th or they will expire, not sure about how long until the username will be released to be required. Also along the lines of previous posts there is no problem with have multiple iCloud accounts on the same device, I have 3 that coexist peacefully for the most part. Though one will need to be the "primary" iCloud account on the device as certain services will only work with one account on the device at a time, photo stream, documents and data sync, find my iPhone, bookmark syncing, and cloud backup. My MobileMe account is my "primary", while my other two accounts (former iTunes store accounts for Canada and USA) both are only really used to have additional email addresses.

I understand this, however, I would prefer to let my Mobile Me account expire and then reacquire the email address (@me.com) under my current iCloud/iTunes account, which is linked to my Gmail address.

I much prefer to consolidate rather then operate multiple accounts. The only risk is not knowing how long until the @me.com ID will be released into the public domain, if at all.

If you have two (or more) Apple IDs, that's not a problem.

The only problem is if you're using more than one of them for iTunes purchases.

The best approach is simply this: pick one. Use it for iCloud AND iTunes purchases if you can. If not, just iTunes purchases then. Nothing else.

The other Apple IDs you can use for everything or anything else you like.

I went through a couple of lengthy support chats and a phone call and was told on all three that even when MobileMe expires (or if you have them delete your MobileMe account) the email address is burned, it will not be requireable.

You use the same Apple ID for ADC/GSX as iTunes? I was told very strongly not to do this.

And you have never run into issues? About 3 years ago I was expressly told NOT to do this.
