Back when I was a ten and some years beyond I listened to the chart type music or what was popular but outgrew that and ended up roaming the dial on my car radio on a rainy night in 83 until I heard some blues on a Detroit station (NPR WDET) that had a blues hour, and folk, and bluegrass.
I've never really listened much to popular commercial music after that, even my old LPs of heavy rock. I wished I had "discovered" the real music, as I think of it, earlier.
Anyhow, If anyone has music that you recommend, lets hear about it. As for myself, if anyone is interested in some good blues, check out Freddy King for a start. As for real oldies, check out Sleepwalk and Strangers on the Shore on youtube...

Check out some of the older Black Keys stuff. I love it. Also maybe try some Junior Kimbrough. RL Burnside too.

Thanks for the suggestions btw.

Some years ago, I went through a lot of time and expense to get a Folkways CD of Joseph Spence. Now that disc is available (and more) for cheap on iTunes, as well as a bunch of Spence material on Youtube. You might recognize one tune (There Will Be A Happy Meeting In Glory) as the theme to CBC's Vinyl Cafe with Stuart Mclean as interpreted by Ry Cooder.
Very interesting story behind those original Folkways recordings.

Lately I am a very big fan of Rachel Goodrich. Amazing. Her songs seem light and simple and effortless- yet so well crafted, with very fine details and choices in both vocal and instrument selection. Kazoo! Both of her albums are excellent start to finish, and she has done some interesting covers, like Folsom Prison Blues.
Hee's a bit of acoustic slide.

+1 I have almost everything they have ever done and was listening to them years before their current ride in the mainstream. Don't get me wrong the new stuff is great as well, just not as gritty and gutsy as the older stuff.

RL Burnside is great a too, I have a bunch of his stuff as well.
