lol, that not the name. they have to distinguish between the old and the new and you will see (my guess) by the summer/fall the iPad 2 will be gone. I think the numbering system is also gone.

Kinda like how we don't have the MacBook Pro 5, iMac 7, etc. My two cents.

I can't really believe how much I have heard this lately?!?! :(

Do you think that the AIO desktop computer Apple sells is called "the new iMac"? Same goes for Macbooks Pro and Air. How about iPods?

its called and "iPad", as in the new "iPad" not "the new iPad." It is the third generation iPad.

I was discussing this with the better half and when discussing iPad rumours. I was saying about a week or so before the announcement and sometime after the iPad HD rumour, that I thought they were going to eventually change to the same naming scheme used by their other products. Turns out I was right, and I think it is the right move.

The iPhone won't be far behind, I think Apple got the hint when people got all in a huff about it being called the "iPhone 4S", and not being an "iPhone 5". Yes, people still wanted more more or different features, but the rallying cry was over how it wasn't an "iPhone 5". I would say that the next iPhone would be introduced as the new "iPhone", and be the 6th generation iPhone.

So remember the iPad 4 will also be billed as: the new iPad, but it is just called the "iPad", 4th generation iPad for keeping track.
