: Cable Connection Choice ?
egremont Feb 21st, 2012, 07:18 PM I have a MacBook Pro - 13" - 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - late 2010.
I would like to watch content from this unit on my HDTV..
Would the Kanex Mini Display Port to HDMI be a good choice ? Available on the Apple store for 44.95. Only one cord/connection seems like a good idea.
Appreciate your help/suggestions.
i-rui Feb 21st, 2012, 08:20 PM that would work fine. you can get no-name ones for about $10-20. just make sure it supports audio.
IllusionX Feb 21st, 2012, 08:25 PM mini DP doesn't support HDMI audio.
you might want to get a mini DP to DVI, and then get one of those DVI + Optical to HDMI adapter...

Cheaper to run audio from the headphone port with stereo RCA cables, or with an optical audio cable if the TV or receiver supports it.

It actually does on 2010+ models. (Inc. non-TB models.)

as Lars already said, it does on his model. He just has to make sure the cable he gets supports it as well.
SINC Feb 22nd, 2012, 06:43 AM I recently bought this adpater:
EnjoyGadgets Thunderbolt to HDMI video adapter, with audio support: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/EnjoyGadgets-Thunderbolt-video-adapter-support/dp/B006GH8W1A/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329922214&sr=1-1)
It works great and does carry the audio on my late 2011 MBP to my Samsung 37" LCD TV..
egremont Feb 22nd, 2012, 09:18 AM thank you to all for suggestions and comments
To clarify: my MacBookPro 2010 is pre: i5 and i7 and does not have a Thunderbolt port.
Has a firewire 800 and Mini Display Port and USB ports and Mic port.
SINC Feb 22nd, 2012, 09:48 AM I stand to be corrected, but I believe the mini display port is identical to the thunderbolt port and would accept any mini port to VGA or thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.

for the purpose of connecting it to a tv, then yes it would be identical.
the difference of course would be if he wanted to do the other stuff that thunderbolt was designed for....then he'd be out of luck.

Thanks, that confirms my belief that you can indeed connect to a TV without difficulty using a mini port adapter via the thunderbolt port.
egremont Feb 23rd, 2012, 01:05 PM Update: Yesterday, taking into consideration all of your suggestions and other apple forums, I went into town and stopped in the local F.S. to see what they could offer.
I purchased a Rocketfish - Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter. I used my own HDMI cable. I had to remove the cable from a player to allow the hookup. No more available HDMI ports.
It went Perfectly - could hardly believe it! Checked in preferences for display and audio - it had allready found my little Panasonic.
I spent the rest of the afternoon listening/watching to Ken Burn's Jazz via NetFlicks South and my MacBookPro.
Way too much fun for what a couple would spend on a lunch. Thanks again for all your information and suggestions.
okcomputer Feb 23rd, 2012, 02:05 PM Good to hear! Thanks for reporting back to us.
I, too, was pleasantly surprised how easily/quickly it worked with an HDTV.
