Want to wish one and all here in ehMacLand a happy pre-Flag Day. I am going to try and put out my Canadian flag tomorrow morning at dawn.

The national flag of Canada was inaugurated on February 15, 1965. The anniversary of this date is officially called the "National Flag of Canada Day", which is often shortened to "Flag Day".

Paix, mes amis.

Add your name to the waiting list for a Canadian flag that has flown on Parliament Hill

To request a flag that has flown on Parliament Hill, you must send a written request with your name, complete home address and telephone number, as well as your choice of flag.

The approximate waiting period is currently:

Flag Size Pole requirements Waiting period
Peace Tower flag 2.3 m x 4.6 m
(7.5 ft x 15 ft) 13.7 m to 15.2 m
(45 ft to 50 ft) 35 years

East or West Block flag 1.4 m x 2.8 m
(4.5 ft x 9 ft) 9.1 m to 10.7 m
(30 ft to 35 ft) 23 years

Our policy is to give only one flag per household. As these flags are paid for by Canadian taxpayers, they are given to residents and are not sent outside of Canada. Should you move before having received your flag, it is your responsibility to notify our office of your change of address so that we may update your file.

To request a flag or to report a change of address, please contact Public Works and Government Services Canada by letter, facsimile or email:

I keep submitting my name, but to no avail. The last two times I was told that such flags were only sent to people living in Canada and that NL was in Europe.:(

One my neighbours that lives a few houses down from me is a retired gentleman that goes around the area handing out flags for us to fly. He makes us sign an agreement that we'll fly the flag on certain dates in exchange for the free flag. The results are impressive though as our neighbourhood has tons of flags flying year round and really sets us apart from most other area's in the city.

That's a great idea. Sadly, I am the only one to fly a Canadian flag on Canada Day, Flag Day, or any other Canadian holiday that has flying a flag an appropriate act. Paix, mon ami.

This reminds me of when I tried to get a driver's licence in the USA, and was told by phone that if I had a Canadian licence, they would give me a local USA one. But then when I went to the local Motor Vehicles office, they refused to give me one. I was near starvation by that time, having been in the usual USA line up , so I went home, and after recovering, I phoned up again. And again they said that on the basis of a valid Canadian licence, they would give me a local one. So I lined up again, this time with food and water to survive the line up. When they once again refused me, I had the strength to protest. They said, Yes, we would give you a driver's licence if you had a Canadian one, but this one is from British Columbia and that is in South America!

Back on that day, I happened to live in one of the very first Canadian communities to raise the new flag (thanks to time zones). That community is erased now.

Happy Flag Day, one and all. Got my flag out at abou 7:20AM, about 10 minutes after sunrise here in St.John's. Had to push the pole into a snow bank, but that is going to keep it solidly in place all day.

Paix, mes amis.

I want to get a flag, would like to have it on my garage. Anyone know of any sites that sell garage mounts for flags?

Should be able to find it at your local Hardware store.
