About time the archaic law caught up with the times. A good move that makes nothing but sense.
OTTAWA*-*By the time of the next federal election, you'll no longer face a fine of up to $25,000 for going public with partial election results before all polls have closed.
"This ban, which was enacted in 1938, (is) out of date and it's unenforceable and that is why we believe that no Canadian should be penalized for the everyday use of modern technology," said Tim Uppal, the minister of state for democratic reform. "They should not be penalized for transmitting, through Facebook or Twitter, the results of the election."
News media will be free to report election results as they happen as well.
Uppal says, by the time Canadians are casting ballots in the 2015 federal election, the Conservative government will repeal the sections of the Canada Elections Act that ban the early transmission of election results.
The ban was introduced when voting hours were uniform across the country and voters in Western Canada would cast ballots after learning the complete vote results in earlier time zones of the country.
Uppal says the staggered voting hours introduced in 1996 will still prevent that, so the fines on publicizing results aren't needed.
"The poll results of less than 10% of Canadian polls can be known to late voters in Western Canada," said the minister. "They will have a small window where they may know the results of some polls in Atlantic Canada and possibly Central Canada, but that's a very small window."
Uppal didn't say when he'd introduce the changes in Parliament.
Cretien kept us out of Iraq, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Now King Harpo is doing his one little bit. To be fair his second little bit as repealing the long gun registry was the first.
