Hi everyone, looking for some advice on a new furnace. We are in need of a new one and are hoping to take advantage of some government rebate soon to expire.
They were offering a Lennox furnace or an American Standard furnace.
Price wise, the American Standard is cheaper, than the Lennox one.
Does anyone have experience with these brands?
Any recommendations or feedback would be great.
If someone is claiming a cracked heat exchange unit, have it checked by a second furnace specialist and make them show you. Sometimes it is true, but a lot of people have been stampeded into replacing furnaces that were in perfect working order or just needed a good cleaning.
We've been planning to replace the furnace since last year due to its age. It has stopped working in the past a couple of times. The previous owners did not replace it and it has been almost 30 years old and not very efficient. Unfortunately it's an expense we cannot avoid at the moment :/
I have had 2 Lennox high efficiency furnaces in the past. Both served me well. there was a lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger on both. It has been about 13 years now since I had one, so I do not know what has changed in the interrum.
Note if you are going to high efficiency, you will not need a humidifier as in most cases they have their own exterior air supply so the negative pressure from a standard furnace drawing air into the house through every crack does not exist. This is not the case in mid efficiency as in that case most of the energy savings are from getting rid of the pilot light and the chimney and air supply remain standard.
I just had mine replaced as the heat exchanger was cracked and it started fitting out fireballs...scary. Anyway we went with a Trane XV95 and so far we really like it.
Almost every home that I've been in after fitting a energy efficient furnace has had heat and cooling dispersal problems.
This brand costs more but what you get is superior to anything I have found on the market. When you factor in that you'll have a furnace for 20 - 30 years it's less painful to swallow.
We replaced our old furnace just over a year ago as part of the EcoAudit program. I spoke to a friend that's in the HVAC field who gave me some recommendations. (Rheem, Carrier, Trane).
Fantastic furnace. It pretty well lives up to its brag sheet on their web site. If end up going with this model, I would recommend the Infinity Thermostat as well.

We still have problems with this piece of junk and from their dealer network to the company themselves, it has been the worst experience I've ever had with a product. Run, don't walk away from them.
If you have one that's working, good for you but the internetz, she is littered with stories of similar bad experiences such as mine. Here's a review site just for furnaces. Carrier ranked 32nd out of 69 brands. Read the reviews there, like this one:
The company and their product is a piece of $#!!. tptptptp
Any company looks good when all goes well. It is how they handle problems that is the true measure. Of course the individual installer can have a lot to do with whether or not a problem leaves a customer bruised for life.

Review:
"Infinity NOISY,NOISY, might as well live on the tarmac"
I'm so sick of being awakened by the "turbine" wind noise coming out of my ceiling vents. I've had repair people out 3 times for this one issue. They never fix it, the system was insanely expensive, I get angry every time I pass by my thermostats, don't buy!

That site you provided makes no sense. How do you find out what is the top furnace? I click on furnace ratings and it lists Frigidaire as the top (never thought they made furnaces) you click on them and it says they are 18 out of 69. So who is #1?
Hi everyone, looking for some advice on a new furnace. We are in need of a new one and are hoping to take advantage of some government rebate soon to expire.
Do you have any options as to what type of heating to use?
I take it you have oil now.
In Ontario I replaced my oil furnace with another oil one since that was the only option I had - no Natural Gas and electricity is too expensive.
I focused more on the company that does the installation and service rather than the brand name - there wasn't that much difference in furnaces in the same price range.
In Quebec I just replaced an old old furnace with an electric furnace.
Electricity here is about 30% cheaper than oil, it's a local, renewable resource and the furnace is just a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 ft box mounted on the wall.
Here I had the choice of oil, natural gas or electricity - electricity won out by a long shot, not just because of the lower cost of heating.
We put a Hi efficiency Lennox in 2 years ago. Not their most expensive, but the next one down. I think I remember them showing 4 price points. I'm happy so far, Good heat, Fan is louder than previous.... Meh...
I woke up one morning to hear the furnace chuffing and there wasn't any heat in the house...when I went to look at it the furnace was covered in soot and when I took the front cover off there was gas fireballs coming from the burners...not something I wanted to see!
Yikes. Some extra info if you had soot coming out of your vents you would be covered under house insurance to get everything cleaned and painted. I had to remind someone who this happen to. The insurance repainted whole house and cleaned every single thing in the house.
No soot in the house but the inside of the burner area was black and toasty and there was a little on the outside as well. It should have been much worse then it turned out to be given the circumstances.
