Just want to let you know I e-mailed Chiquita regarding there decision in regards to the oil sands. I will be boycotting all of their products.
What do you all think of there decision???
A link or some background would have been nice, SB.... for those (like me) who had no idea what you were talking about:
The Ohio-based company said it will work with environmental organization ForestEthics to eliminate shipping of Chiquita bananas with fuel from refineries that use Canada’s oil sands.
But in a statement to the Financial Post, Chiquita’s quest to rid itself of Canadian oil sands seems more of a long-term goal rather than a more aggressive, immediate stance.
“We are not ‘banning’ or boycotting those fuels — we have asked our fuel providers to where possible find alternatives and over time eliminate the usage of those fuels derived for oil sands refineries,” said spokesman Ed Loyd told the Financial Post in an emailed statement.
Canadian oil sands pro-oil sands groups were quick to launch a counter-attack.
Ethicaloil.org, an advocacy group that says Americans should choose Canada’s ‘ethical’ oil over crude from dictatorial regimes in the Middle East, says it will launch a Chiquita boycott campaign soon.
More like a 'counter-campaign', groovetube, to the 'dirty oil' campaign.
I've been concerned about the ethics of using mid east oil for years. The US is the biggest hypocrite on the planet when it comes to 'oil' versus 'human rights'.
I don't buy into this 'ethical' crap. And I don't see how Canada is any different than the US when it comes to oil vs human rights. Of course anything with Ezra Levant in the mix is going to send off the BS alarm.
Like Chiquita ( formerly United Fruit Company) has any moral authority. UFC is responsible for thousands of deaths, oppression, and destroyed rural economies during the 20th century.
No one should purchase anything from Chiquita, just as no one should purchase anything made by Bayer for testing pharmaceuticals on Jewish prisoners during the Holocaust.
Sorry CubaMark, your are absolutely right, I should of expanded more on my comments. I just assumed it was old news and that everybody was up on it.
Another fine example as why it is not a good thing to assume because I end up making ass of myself
Cheers, have a great day all.
I would like to explore the oil sands issue more. If the oil is kept in North America I lean my support that way.
How much damage to the environment is being created shipping oil half way around the world to us? What about oil spills? The Iraq war was over oil, we lost 1000s of lives.
We have higher environmental standards then the UAE. Oil Sands would be more scrutinized and that would ensure the environment protected.
People seem to think that if the oil is handled outside our backyard the environment issues aren't a concern.
Kyoto was a bad idea from the beginning. Something needs to be done, but that wasn't it. My boss is big into Russia and said that the level Russia was allowed to use was from when they were breaking up the USSR which gave them tons of wiggle room as the economy / industry had shut down.

Absolutely. They were benefiting from the fact that their economy was in the hole, and thus their CO2 output was reduced.
The U.S. is currently achieving a little of the same wih the current economic slowdown.
My favourite under Kyoto was India's Tata Motors getting pay-outs for building a coal-fired generating plant--because they had first announced a dirty plant, then subsequently announced it would be a cleaner plant.
