Hi All:
A while back, there was a simple to use site which gave you the fair and real retail value for mac systems. I believe it was all in CDN dollars - mabe CDN site?? I can't recall the site and would appreciate your help. Everymac.com tends to have slightly inflated costs imho. Thanks in advance!

Mac2Sell - Guide to used Mac... (http://mac2sell.net/)?

The problem with Mac2Sell is that it should only be a starting point. IMHO it tends to price low on certain things and high on others (and it doesn't take certain things into account like condition). Your best bet is to use it as a starting point and then look at the eBay completed listings for your model. Kijiji, Craigslist and incomplete eBay are less helpful because they only show what the seller wants to get (which in a lot of cases is way too high).

Another great resource is the root Classifieds forum here, where you can request a price check from the ehmac membership (and there's no better authority on the local used Mac market).

Hi:

Thanks for your responses. The problem is that I don't use eBay so I'm not sure how to search for the 'completed' sales. I understand what you're saying - systems like the ones I'm researching that have already sold. Don't those ads get removed almost immediately? Sorry, you're speaking to an eBay idiot!

Thanks again for an explanation forthcoming.

eBay does not delete them, but it does hide them. You enter your search for the item you want, and then there is a check box to the lower left of the screen, under "show only," for "completed listings."

A quick note to this is you have to be a eBay member and signed in to do this search

This is true...

Not only that, ebay also only shows you the completed auctions of the last 15 days.
There are other sites where you can pay some money and they will go back in history a lot more - never tried one of those however.

I just tried an eBay search of completed listings without signing in, on a computer with completely erased cookies, etc.

Apple iMac 21.5 Core 2 DUO APPLE | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_nkw=Apple+iMac+21.5%22++Core+2+DUO+APPLE&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=See-All-Categories&_okw=Apple+iMac+21.5%22++Core+2+DUO+APPLE&_oexkw=&_adv=1&LH_Complete=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=200&_fpos=Zip+code&_fsct=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50)

Is that readable to others?

Yup, I can see it, and I'm not logged in to eBay.

So, how did you do it?

ebay.ca > Advanced search > check the box for completed listings.

Or, to completely spell it out:

Search Completed Listings (http://pages.ebay.com/completedlistings/)

Thanks, that works!

I think eBay must have changed their policy about this recently since I'm pretty sure in the past you had to be logged in to view completed listings.

Hi All:
Thanks to all of you for your help. I used the link HW 'spelled' out and tried to search for: Apple PowerBook G4 1.33 12" with 1.33 GHz Processor+ 80 GB HD+1.25 GB RAM+WiFi.

I want to sell mine and can't find anything remotely similar in completed listings. I think it needs a new hd so how would I figure that into the sale price?

Thanks to everyone, again-for your ongoing help.

I have been looking for exactly what you are selling for the past little while and have two sellers ready to sell fully working laptops at about $200 for each just to let you know. I am not sure if $200 is too much or I am getting a steal, one with original box and discs though I am not in a hurry to pay out yet, let me know what you are asking.

Really? I found several:

PowerBook-G4-1-33-GHz-12-Aluminum-Notebook-80GB (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-PowerBook-G4-1-33-GHz-12-Aluminum-Notebook-80GB-b-/230724184294?pt=Apple_Laptops&hash=item35b83ba8e6#ht_2082wt_1299)
Apple-PowerBook-G4-1-33-GHz-12-Aluminum-Notebook-60GB (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-PowerBook-G4-1-33-GHz-12-Aluminum-Notebook-60GB-b-/230724024641?pt=Apple_Laptops&hash=item35b8393941#ht_2159wt_1299)
Apple-12-PowerBook-G4-1-33GHz-w-Box-and-Accessories (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-12-PowerBook-G4-1-33GHz-Very-Nice-Mac-w-Box-and-Accessories-/120835394892?pt=Apple_Laptops&hash=item1c2259cd4c#ht_720wt_1299)

and this one I would say is closest to yours:
12-Aluminum-PowerBook-G4-1-33Ghz-1-25GB-ram (http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Aluminum-PowerBook-G4-1-33Ghz-1-25GB-ram-Good-condition-/290648931749?pt=Apple_Laptops&hash=item43ac06bda5#ht_6518wt_1299)

So these run from $135 US to $212.50 US depending on RAM, whether or not the discs & box are included etc... factor in between $30 and $50 for shipping and we get a range of $160 - $260

In my opinion (and to be fair I've been out of the used Mac market for about 3 years now)

So start with a base of about $200, add $20 if you have the box & discs, add another $20 for any additional batteries / extra power adapters / bags etc...

Now we have to deal with the Hard drive Issue... it's a bad time for a drive failure and a lousy machine to have a failure in. Bad time because flooding in Thailand has jacked the price of replacements up (so a replacement will cost 30 - 40% more today than it would have six months ago). Lousy machine to have a failure in because it's old enough to use IDE drives... this is an issue because smaller sizes are harder to find and larger drive generally equals larger price. The cheapest I was able to find was a Samsung Spinpoint 160GB drive at NCIX for $80 (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=35348&vpn=HM160HC&manufacture=Samsung) (however CanadaRAM has the same drive (http://www.canadaram.com/2_5_ide_hard_drive.htm) with no price on it so they may be beating that).

The point is that the replacement cost for the HD will be $80 plus labour (and before somebody else says it the swap out is really easy in that model, but unless your buyer's comfortable doing it they'll have to pay a tech to swap it out). So you should be discounting the machine by around $80 or so IMHO.

Fair with a bad drive is around $100 - $140 depending on any extras you have with it. You might get a higher offer from a Mac repair tech since the drive swap out is so easy and a tech is likely to already have a replacement drive on hand.

Again this is only my opinion based on the current market as I understand it.

*corrected for poor Southeast Asian geography;)

With exception that the flooding was in Thailand, not Taiwan, I think MacMagicianJunior has done a pretty bang on assessment.

There may also be an issue with "I think it needs a new hd," that a potential buyer will be dealing with. If it's something else, or the hard drive and something else...

You are correct, whoops, I had misheard the story and thought the flooding was based on the typhoon that hit Taiwan on August 26th. Correction added.

Thanks to everyone, including those who find the time to bring a quick geographic 'info in passing'. I never cease to marvel, you guys here just rock. Hey However, I'm still searching for your dreamgirl there! Glad to see everyone still has brilliant and logical musings for me. I've got a whack of semi working ibooks and powerbooks. I'm going to take a look as to whether any of the hds in these systems are suitable. The ONLY THING wrong with the systems??? They ALL have a broken screen. I have a daughter who, well, let's not even go there. While I'm in that subject area, DOES ANYONE HAVE A 17" 1.67 powerbook screen for sale/parts? I just need the screen -please? Thanks again everyone. Keep up the never ending lessons in mac recycle-values.
