An angry confrontation between a Toronto cyclist and a motorist ended with the driver deliberately forcing the cyclist off the road and knocking her to the ground, police said Thursday.
A man faces several charges in the incident that unfolded Wednesday morning on a west-end street.
Police say a 35-year-old woman was riding her bike in the city's west end when she got into the left lane in order to make a left turn.
A 38-year-old man driving a car behind the woman also wanted to make a left turn, police said, adding the driver went into the oncoming lane to pass the cyclist.
Shortly afterwards, an argument ensued between the two, police said.
It's alleged the man turned his car toward the woman, forcing her onto the sidewalk. The driver then drove up onto the sidewalk and continued alongside the cyclist before striking her with his car and knocking her to the ground.
This is the probably the single biggest reason I do not want to live in Toronto for the rest of my life. It's all out war between cyclists and drivers and as far as I'm concerned it's just a race to the bottom... Sick to death of this.
It certainly doesn't help matters when your own mayor stands up and publicly whines about cyclists as the real problem, saying that when a cyclist gets killed it's usually their own fault.
Cyclists really need a left turn lane, I mean really, What was Miller thinking when he allowed
cyclists drive on the roads like motor vehicles, Should have realized that a left turning
cyclist is going to cross paths with the car in behind in order to get back over to the right lane.
I believe the "Motor Vehicle Act" or some similarly entitled legislation provides for that.
I believe the motorist in this needs severe correction with regard to the proper use and handling of a motor vehicle. Upon cursory information provided the operator of the motor vehicle has strayed into the territory of criminal sanctions.
I feel it is far too easy for Canadians to acquire an operators permit for a motor vehicle and no operator permits are required for bicycles is another mistake.
I knocked a cyclist down years ago in Vancouver- he was in my blind spot as I pulled over to park- he wasnt hurt thank God , but it was a lesson to us both.
I ride as well some and as a motorcyclist have had similar problems - had some close calls from cellular doughheads in cages
The guy should be on a charge of attempted murder with a dangerous weapon imo
