Hi all,

My 85W magsafe charger died (for 2007 MBP) and I'm looking to replace it without spending a hundred bucks for a new from Apple. Does anyone know if OEMs like the ones from Buy Batteries Direct are any good?

Apple 85W A1172 MagSafe Replacement Power Adapter for MacBook Pro 13" 15" 17" Series Laptops (http://www.buybatteriesdirect.com/apple-85w-magsafe-replacement-power-adapter-for-macbook-pro-13-15-and-17-inch-series-laptops/)

Thanks for any help!

Bite the bullet, buy the apple adapter.

It may be 100$, but thats 100$ you know won't cause any issues to your computer.

Can't attest to your vendor, but I can say we purchased one from PWR+ through Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/browse.html?ie=UTF8&marketplaceID=A2EUQ1WTGCTBG2&me=A8ULOE3TR492Q) back in July for a 12" MacBook.

The charger itself is different shaped than Apple's, but there's a cord on one end that plugs into the wall & a cord on the other end with a Mag Safe adapter. ;)

Works fine & saved beaucoup bucks.

I picked up a PWR+ adapter in August and haven't had any problems either. BUT I don't think they make a 85W AC version.

Keep in mind that the BBD unit does not come with the power cord ($9 extra) and the company states that ALMOST all of their products have UL and CSA certification. Meaning of course, that SOME are not safety certified for use in North America. Conveniently, they do not state for this product yea or nay.

It's a shot in the dark, but take it to an Apple Store genius bar and ask if there's anything they can do. 90% they'll offer to sell you a replacement but I've seen power adapter replaced long out of warranty. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I have bought many aftermarket Chinese built power supplies with and without CSA and UL certifications!
My house hasn't burned down nor has my Mac blown up!
Take all advice with a grain of salt!

I've heard from some sources that the mag-safe end on these 3rd party units are taken off of defective Apple Mag-Safe adapters. This may or may not be true but it should at least be considered.

I bought an aftermarket on and it worked fine for half a year or so, then died. Ended up buying an OEM Apple unit.

I think it's only safe to buy Chinese goods when they have an Apple stamp on them as then I know I've paid too much but it's easier to sleep at night!
I always love the CSA and UL approvals!
It gets really good when you only have one or the other then you know the other guys are really sticking their necks out!

Our shop sold some of the chinese knock-off adapters for a while, since they were cheaper (and more profitable to us) than the Apple ones (which we also sold).

After getting many returns of dead units and watching one CATCH FIRE on us as we tested it, we removed the Chinese knock-off ones from our store and did not sell them again. YMMV, but ask yourself if its worth the risk.

Wow, I thought I'd be lucky to get one response but ended up with 1.5 pages! This is what makes this forum great. Thanks for the advice!

Shame on you, Chas M.

Your advice is not in line with majority thought.

We want to pay the most cheepest up front price. We do not care about reliability, service, or warranty.

Gheese Terry, you're all over the map with some of your recent comments about price and quality that you posted to some other threads about RAM and quality vs. price.

And FWIW, I've got a "cheap" non-"Apple" 85W magsafe power adapter for several uses to replace their failed "Apple" 65W magsafe power adapter that are ALL still running and operating some years later now with their MB and MBPs.

And, BTW, I've never encountered ANY problems with using CanadaRAM's "generic" memory modules and the often "cheaper" price was often a help for the end user.

Edit PS: The "cheap" non-"Apple" 85W magsafe power adapters I purchased also had a better and longer warranty/replacement policy but it may depend on what place they'er ordered and purchased from. So it pays to check.

"WE", I assume that means you must be in the wrong forum then.....

When one buys a Mac one certainly doesn't get the cheapest up front price and one does care about reliability, service and warranty.

It's funny how the two most successful US companies purchase the majority, if not all of their goods from China?
One retails the most expensive products from China "Apple" and the other the most inexpensive ones! "Walmart"
Their success lies not in the quality of the product but the service and warranty that they provide!

Go figure?

The new generation of magsafe adapters from Apple also use some special kind of rubber or something that always keeps your cord wound the same way to avoid kinks, if that's worth anything to you. I use mine A LOT so I am prepared to pay a little extra for quality, a philosophy it seems most Apple users also have.

Hey, pm-r, just curious where you bought your power adapters?

Just for the record, this is the 2nd power adapter since 2007 that's died. Of course, I could have just had bad luck, but I'm not exactly sold on Apple's magsafe reliability/safety. If I recall, the original magsafe (rectangular vs the newer square ones) also had some safety issues (Google "magsafe fire"). I still might end up buying an Apple replacement (for lack of a good alternative) but just 'cause it's from Apple doesn't necessarily mean it's safe/reliable (there, I said it).

I was sure that I had purchased them from Laptop Batteries / Notebook Batteries / Camcorder Batteries / Digital Camera Batteries. Low price and fast delivery. (http://intelligentbatteries.ca/) where I've often purchased their batteries as well, but when I checked to provide a URL I couldn't find any listing for any power adapters.

Same with BattDepot.ca - Specialize in selling aftermarket batteries for laptop and notebook computers, camcorder, digital cameras, PDA and Apple iPods (http://www.battdepot.ca/) and NCIX.com - Canada's Premier Computer Store - Online PC Discount Store, Buy Computer Accessories (http://ncix.ca/) the other on-line stores I often purchase from.

It was at least year or two ago that I purchased them for some users and I can't seem to find a receipt or sales confirmation.

If and when I do, I'll post the source address.
