I've got a Beige G3 Mini Tower 300 that already has a 40 gig harddrive in it. Does anyone know if I could put a a second hardrive in this machine, if so what things show i watch out for?
Also will a Usb 2 card be compatable with this machine? My thought is to maybe get an 80gig or 120gig external drive but they all seem to be only usb 2 compatibale

Thank

I have a USB 2.0 card in my Beige G3 desktop, But you should really go for a Firewire card, It would be a faster and better route to go for an external hard drive. (USB is great for keyboards and scanners and...)

You can install a second hard drive internally, But you will have to set the second drive as a slave drive, Your CD drive should be the master on the second ATA bus, Unless you have the ultra wide scsi, Then I'm not sure how you have to confiqure it.(You'll need to assign addresses).

You could also get a Sonnet ATA 133 PCI card that will enable you to have up to 4 more internal drives at a faster transfer rate and allow you to have another master hard drive to boot from.

You can look up your Mac at:

If you're the original owner of the machine and the ROM hasn't been swapped, check your onboard video - if it's "Rage II" - then you'd need a ATA PCI card because your ATA chains can't hold more than 1 drive each. However, if it's a "Rage Pro" or "Rage Pro Turbo," then each ATA chain can hold up to 4 devices. In that case, you'd just need to set the second hard drive to 'Slave' and you're good to go.

And I agree: For external hard drives, go with FireWire, not USB 2.0 or USB 1.x.
