: Should I get a new console now?

Hello everyone. I just wanted an opinion from everyone, asking if I should get a new console now. I mean I have an old PS2 and want to upgrade to a PS3 or Xbox 360. I am not debating about which console to get, but I just wonder IF now is the right time. I have a feeling that one of the 2 companies will pull out a great update and will then make my Xbox 360 or PS3 worthless, because then publishers would start making games for that updated console. If you know anything with news in terms of console updates, that we be great to hear as well.

Thanks! :D

That depends but I'd say go for it... If you haven't bit the bullet yet I'm guessing you aren't the type of person who always needs to have the lattest and greatest. As well... While I would expect minor tweaks to the current consoles in the next year or so... I think we are still several years away from a wholesale redesign... Both because the technology still has a few years left in it and because neither Microsoft nor Sony are in a hurry to move on from this generation, they are both at a mature stage which is when they make the most money on them with continued decent sales figures and production costs lowering...

According to the Wikipedia entry on the XBox 360 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360), Microsoft says the current XBox 360 S model, introduced in June 2010, will remain unchanged through 2015.

A friend with whom I share a Halo addiction recently had to buy the new model when his frequently-repaired-and-now-dead 360 completely gave up the ghost.

He still finds himself wondering why the XBox has shut itself off... when in fact, the new one is simply so quiet you can't even hear the thing... a far cry from the jet engine that was the previous model (purchased in 2006).

So - in terms of hardware, it looks like MS will not be changing their console for some time to come... and really, it's all about the games you want to play. That's really the decision, isn't it?

Thanks for some responses. On the contrary, since I am a Computer geek, I am the kind of person who wants the latest and greatest. However, I am modest about what I need, because I got my new iMac in mid 2010 and that was already 2 grand with taxes... So that's why I especially have not upgrade to a PS3 or Xbox 360.

I feel like my Mac handles some of my gaming fun (Uberstrike HD, EPIC), but I feel like I missing out on some games that are usually for consoles (Driver San Francisco, MC LA, and others), which is why I feel like I should upgrade my old PS2. As well, with an HDMI, I could play with HD graphics on my recently updated 32 inch HD TV, than with 480i on the PS2.

SO, I guess I have made me decision to probably upgrade, but probably not this year. Perhaps next year on my birthday, as I am getting some new gadgets this Christmas and that already excites me.

So know it's a matter of PS3 or Xbox 360? I do not need a debate, but I rather want some experiences with each of these two consoles... Thanks... :D

I have both, and both are great. 6 months ago I would have told you to lean towards the PS3 as the 360 Elite was pretty loud, and it really annoyed me if I was watching movies on it. The version I have now, and I asume all subsequent versions, is much quieter. So, that's a coin flip. The admin interface on the 360 is much better, in my opinion.

Sony did just have an issue with a lot of their customer account data getting scraped. It wouldn't put me off purchasing though.

If you have a PS2, then you already know that some games are not cross platform. If there's a particular series that you've been loving on your Playstation and you know it won't make it to the 360, then you may want to lean towards the PS3. Lots of great titles on the 360 as well though, that you can't get for the PS3 ... Halo and Gears of War come to mind.

If you buy now, you're good for at least three years. Heck my XBox has been good for four and a half years so far. It's a powerful system.

I am already aware of the hacking that has happen, but I still believe in the PS3's excellence and I am quite impressed with the Xbox 360 S, but I do have quite the dilemma about the two... See, my bedroom gets to be quite dusty and if I get the 250GB Xbox 360 S, it might get dirty quick, but at least I get 250 Gb of storage for media and such, but I will have to pay 60$ for a year of Xbox membership...

If I at least get the 120GB PS3, it has a matte finish, so it's easy to clean off dust and will still look quite nice, and the online is free, but not as strong as Xbox...

What should I choose?

3 years seem long enough, but since I am not getting this year, that puts me down to 2 years, if your estimates are true... :(

Nintendo's next console is out in 2012, so you can bet the others will follow suit if there's something innovative up Nintendo's sleeve.

I'm waiting until the next roun of consoles even though most ppl are saying it'll be a couple more years at least.

Well that interesting that Nintendo is coming out with a new console, but I am not a fan nor will I be a user of Nintendo products...

Right, but point being that these things happen in waves. Each generation of consoles are released concurrently, so if Nintendo offers something new, it's entirely likely Sony and Microsoft will too even if they are tight lipped about it.

Sony and Microsoft were not planning on releasing a new console for a couple of years, as their hardware is still viable, where Nintendo's hardware is quite dated, (not hard to imagine since it isn't much more powerful than the first Xbox). Nintendo needs to come up with a new console and it would likely be only similar to the 360 and PS3 in terms of graphics power.

So in theory it should be fine to upgrade now to the newer consoles(not nintendo), but the question is whether you want to play some newer games now or later? There is a price to pay for being on the trailing edge, and it's the short time before replacement of the console.

Myself, the reason why I jumped to PS3 from Xbox was free multiplayer and Blu-Ray capabilities. Back then, though, PS3 also had built-in wireless, HDMI, and didn't need batteries or purchasing rechargeable batteries, for the controllers.

If you're having difficulty deciding, take a look at the games (especially the exclusives), that might help you decide.

Thanks for all the input everyone, including yourself Manny... It has not been an issue for deciding, but I was debating about the esthetics (read my old post about the possible dilemma I could have), but I do think that I will get PS3, seeing as do now have an HD TV, so Blue-Ray Movies would be nice to watch... Hopefully, I will get one next year...

Games that appear on both systems are of better quality on xbox. The online multiplayer while not free on xbox its 10x better experience. The PS3 move is terrible a waste of time where as Kinect has made xbox sales surge and more title coming soon.

Watch next week for all the info of both at E3. And I will say Sony security issue to me is not over they will attach again just as they did last week with Sony Pictures.

With respects to on-line multiplayer -- what exactly are Xbox 360's advantages?

it depends on the game. certain titles will be better on the xbox, while others will be better on the PS3. I think a year or two back most games would have had a slightly better edge on teh xbox, but now that developers are more familiar with the PS3 it's nudged over to the PS3.

From a purely technical POV the PS3 has a much superior processor and more ram. The xbox 360 has a slightly better GPU.

The big thing that sets the PS3 apart for me is the blu-ray capability, and i've also been impressed with using them as a media server with 'PS3 Media Server' running on my mac pro to serve up content. There's been the odd file it could not play, but overall i've been very happy with it (so much so that I gave up on the apple TV and just use my PS3s to watch content)

Sorry I have tried the same game on both, and they are not the same. As i said when a game is developed for both platforms, xbox wins hands down. the PS3 may have a better graphics processor but that only comes in hand for games developed just for the PS3. I have both so I know. I always buys games for the xbox instead of the PS3, when games are for only PS3 I buy those and so does everyone else I know who have both. I have also owned a Wii and have sold it because it wasn't for me.

Multiplayer friend parties are much much better, you and friends stay together and can talk no matter where you are in the Live experience. You can watch movies together at the same time, via netflix. Sorry the online experience is much better than the PS3, and what the PS3 has been down for a month.?
