I am considering revamping my home set-up and looking to see what value my two current machines have.

1) MacPro

This is the model I have:

Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.8 (2008) Specs (Mac Pro Early 2008, MA970LL/A, MacPro3,1, A1186, 2180) @ EveryMac.com (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/stats/mac-pro-eight-core-2.8-2008-specs.html)

Dual 2.8
10GB of RAM (4x4x1x1)
4TB HDD (4 x WDC WD1001FALS, i.e 4 Western Digital Black drives)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D

The machine has no Apple care left, had been completely problem free for me. Cosmetically perfect, has never left the house and sits on a desk, so it hasn't been kicked around like a lot of towers.

2) Mac Book

This is the model I have:

MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13" (Unibody) Specs (Late 2008/Aluminum, MB466LL/A, MacBook5,1, A1278, 2254) @ EveryMac.com (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-aluminum-13-late-2008-unibody-specs.html)

2.0 Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
8X DL SuperDrive

"Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under the AppleCare Protection Plan.
Estimated Expiration Date: February 11, 2012"

Completely a trouble free machine for me, this too has rarely left the house. As you can see it still has Applecare. With one exception, its completely flawless. Screen, casing, etc. Battery is also very strong, Its had 230 load cycles and current capacity is 3881/4100mAh, 94% of its original strength. No issues getting 4 hours with light surfing, MS Office running etc.

The "one exception" is a dent on the top right corner (imagine the machine with its lid closed, looking top down with the Apple logo facing up). The laptop had a small fall while in a laptop bag and got a dent about half the size of a dime, i straightened it, does not interfere with the hinge operation, and again....the laptop is completely flawless with the exception of this cosmetic blemish. How it would affect an Applecare claim? Your guess is as good as mine.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

I am aware of that site.

I am asking the opinions of real live humans on this board.

Thanks for the input.

I'm thinking close to $2,000 for the Mac Pro, considering the HDs and RAM and assuming it will be sold in Toronto where there are a few to choose from.

MacBook $700 to $725 based on recent sales here.

May I remind you that the waranty is NOT a selling point as apple state the warranty is only good for the person who bought it. I would guess the Mac Pro would be anywhere from 2250-2500 my reasoning is the large amount of RAM and your HDD setup and the fact thats its a octo-core, also if your were to upgrade the graphics to a 5770 you could definitely increase the price(Possibly more than you pay for the card if you get it for a good deal) because the graphics would be at par with the mac pro's. The mac book has what sounds to be a good battery life for a used unit as well as average specs the dent is the kicker as well as my little fact about the warranty I would say 600-750. Also if you are selling to a friend you could find a way to get around the warranty thing by you making the call and make the warranty claim or change the address to your friends and just get him to say your name when making any claim.

AppleCare is tied to the computer not the person... It is 100% transferable.

"Is the AppleCare Protection Plan transferable?
Yes. If you choose to sell or give away your Apple product, you can also transfer the ownership of the AppleCare Protection Plan."

I've seen that MacPro with 2GB of RAM and same graphics card offered at a local retailer for $1,400 + tax = $1580. I figure $80 apiece for the HDs (Canada Computers) and $296 for the additional RAM (4 X 2GB kit, Canada RAM) = about $2000 with a little rounding.

And yes, AppleCare is transferable.
