: RAM questions......

I have a friend coming over tonight so I can install an OS for him onto it.

Its a Mac from a few years ago.
We talked about this Mac in another thread but i now need some further info.

The Mac info is pasted into some screen shots below.

As you can see he only has 1 Gig of Ram at the moment and I am afraid that when it comes to the subject of Ram I am utterly clueless.

What i need to find out is how much RAM this model of Mac can take?

And, what is the average price of such Ram?
And if there is a place in Toronto that is known for better prices on Ram, Id appreciate it if someone could let me know the name please?

There is someone on this forum that has 2 x 1Gig ram he can purchase from him which would bring him up to 3gigs but i dont know if that is the best way for him to go at this point?
I am looking for suggestions at this point.
( after we do this, I will suggest he joins this forum himself as well ) :)

HES a musician that isn't wealthy so I am trying to locate Ram for him as inexpensively as possible but i dont have a connection to anyone selling new Ram unfortunately.

His Mac is one of those black ones from a few years ago......

He only has two slots for RAM and thus likely has 2x512kb sticks in the computer currently. 2x1GB would actually only be able to bring the machine to 2GB. You can a a 2GB stick and bring it to 2.5gb, but you'll take a slight performance hit from not having matched pairs. I think 3GB is the max this computer can Handle so you won't have the benefit of matched pairs in that instance anyway. I would add a 2GB stick in place of one of the 512's. The other thing is that there is barely any space left on the hard drive and that will have significant effect on performance. have it delete stuff he doesn't need or move it to an external drive (backed up elsewhere as well, of course)

SD-B....

I think the first thing that's needed is to identify exactly which Mac this is.

I can't tell from what you posted - click on "More Info"
That will give you all the hardware info about this Mac that you ever want to know including how many RAM slots you have and the maximum amount of RAM that Mac takes can then be checked on a number of web sites.

As jwooton mentioned - you need to do something about the amount of data on the hard drive.

It sounds like a MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13" (Black)
Apple MacBook Specs (All MacBook Technical Specs) @ EveryMac.com (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html)

Full specs at:
MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13" (Black) Specs (Late 2006, MA701LL/A, MacBook2,1, A1181, 2121) @ EveryMac.com (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-black-13-specs.html)

See:
"RAM Type: PC2-5300 DDR2 Min. RAM Speed: 667 MHz
Details: Supports 667 MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM. Also see: How do you upgrade the RAM in the MacBook? How much RAM of what type does it support?"

"Standard RAM: 1.0 GB Maximum RAM: 4 GB*
Details: 1 GB of RAM is installed as two 512 MB modules, no slots free.

*Apple officially supports 2 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been "unofficially" able to upgrade it to 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM (it can hold 4 GB but cannot fully utilize the memory beyond 3 GB)."

Canada Computers, if you know exactly what you want/need and know you won't need any support with it.
