: Can't access certain sites from Mac, but can from Windows?
tendim Aug 15th, 2010, 09:30 AM I have an odd situation.
With my Mac (OS X 10.5.8) Recently I've been having issues connecting to some sites. By "Connecting" I mean that I can't even get a simple ping or traceroute to work. However, I can access those sites from a Windows machine on the same network. Both machines are connected via hard-line directly to my router.
If I do a ping on the Windows machine and get the IP, if I try to ping that IP directly on the Mac I get a "ping: sendto: No route to hose" error. Because I can access it from Windows on the same network, I know that my connectivity works. The Mac just can't get there for some reason.
Both machines use the same router/subnet mask/DNS settings as well (all done via DHCP, and I've verified that the numbers line up).
Any ideas?
Thanks!

bsenka Aug 15th, 2010, 10:13 AM I frequently get the same thing, it's one of the reasons I always keep a cheap Windows machine around. There are workarounds, but even they only work sometimes.
jeepguy Aug 16th, 2010, 07:23 PM I believe your running into webpages with vbscript or activex, as far as I know it's only supported in IE. there are a few pages that I visit for work, that rely heavily on vbscript/activex to perform files transfers, and authentication.
CubaMark Aug 16th, 2010, 08:55 PM Just as an experiment, install a proxy, like HotSpot Shield (http://hotspotshield.com/) on the Mac. Connect to the proxy and see if you still have trouble connecting. (It's also useful for accessing IP-restricted multimedia content, like the major networks' online TV shows, etc.).
iTouch Aug 20th, 2010, 01:02 PM Though it's true that websites with windows-only features like activex will not be accessible via mac browsers this is not likely the case if you are unable to ping them either.
Are you trying to ping/traceroute the website's URL or IP?
pm-r Aug 20th, 2010, 02:58 PM Is it possible that you have 'Parental Control' enabled??? - and if so see if there is an option such as "try to block adult websites automatically".
tendim Aug 25th, 2010, 10:29 PM Hey group.
I feel like an idiot. At one point a long time ago I had installed PeerGuardian, and forgot about it. Just goes to show you how unobtrusive the software really is. After I disabled it I could ping out the sites, and connect to them.
I'll respond to other comments so that ehMac readers of the future might have some points of reference. :D
Are you trying to ping/traceroute the website's URL or IP?
Yes, I had managed to do a traceroute and a ping to the server name on my Windows machine, and then tried to perform a direct ping from the Mac from terminal, using the IP address only (so that I could rule out the DNS).

iTouch hit it on the head: even those sitea running ActiveX should still allow me to connect to them. In this day and age I'd be surprised if sites could not at least detect the lack of ActiveX though.

While I didn't try out the link you sent, that is a great reference to have for the future! Thanks!

Note: you'll have varying degrees of success with Hotspot Shield. I've found some network sites in the US work ok, but Hulu and others still figure out that "you aren't from 'round these parts" and you are no more successful with the proxy than you are going there directly.

pm-r... The spam was posted at 1:32 AM and deleted shortly after 8:00am. Steps are being put into place to keep this spammer off the boards.
If you encounter spam on ehMac (Or any boards), Please, please, PLEASE do not quote the spam or start a new thread posting the spam links.  If not for another member alerting me to the fact another member was mistakenly reposting the spam links, your account would most likely have been zapped as I delete spam from my bed first thing in the morning from my iPhone. :)
Thanks...
pm-r Aug 27th, 2010, 10:29 PM Thanks for the info and as well as the info in the email I received, posted date: Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 13:40:29 +0000 and stamped received date from: * ehMac.ca 6:40 AM 8/27/10
I had never really noticed the "little red bordered triangle" you referred to or its purpose.

EDIT: Interesting, "... your account would most likely have been zapped ...".
I wonder if that's what happened to my original ehmac account I setup around 2003-2006 era and was never able to re-establish, even though the old account data was in my keychain.
Something for other non-spamming members to be aware of.

I had exactly the same problem a little while back - tried to report an inappropriate post and found no way to do that.
That little red bordered triangle is meaningless - a button with some actual words on it close to where one normally clicks to reply to a specific post (ie bottom right) would be much better and a heck more logical.
pm-r Aug 28th, 2010, 12:42 AM I just tried clicking the "little red bordered triangle" in your post, which if I held the pointer over it for a while showed "Report Post" and when clicked I ended up with a window and a "Report Post" and an option to add a message but the window also had a note that said:
"Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."
It looks like it should work for its intended purpose, but I sure didn't realize why it was there and/or for what purpose - but now I know!! ;-)
EDIT: PS: I'm NOT about to complete the operation for reporting your post. ;-)

The function definitely works, but it didn't register with me either:
