So I come home and plug in my new iPhone 4 to computer and start up iTunes.

It give me 2 options.

1. Set up as new iPhone
2. Restore from backup of (3G iPhone)

Which one should I do?

Totally up to you.

I wanted to start fresh, so I set it up as a new phone.

If you want all your apps and settings and everything, then restore from that backup!

If I start freash do I have to go and buy the apps again? Meaning pay twice?

Is there a con to restoring from backup?

No, you can choose to sync over your previously purchased apps - provided they are in the apps folder in your library on iTunes.

Which option is that? Sorry I know dumb question.

I would like to get all the apps I had on my 3G onto my iPhone 4. Is that the best method?

I am just afraid I will make a bad choice and screw it all up.

You will not have to purchase your apps again. They will be synced over to the new phone, but they will not contain any settings or data or anything - your phone will be a clean slate.

You can try restoring from the 3G backup and see how it goes. It should be totally fine, but with a new machine or phone, I always start fresh. It gives me a chance to only put on what I want.

However, if you have texts and settings and photos and such on your 3G - you might want to get them off first, or do the restore if it's really important to you that they're on your 4G.

Apparently if you do an Encrypted Backup first, it will bring along all your passwords? Seemed to work pretty well for me.

And yes, restore from backup.

One option I would like Apple to change while syncing is put it into airplane mode, because I am afraid that someone will call while I am syncing and it will screw up.

Is that possible?

And yes I selected Restore.

If you receive a call, it will ask you if you want to cancel the sync and answer the call. You can ignore the call and the sync will continue.
