AppleInsider | Study finds 14% of free iPhone apps can snoop contacts (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/07/29/study_finds_14_of_free_iphone_apps_can_snoop_conta cts.html)

It is not clear how many can send contact info to some server somewhere.....

However:
a wallpaper application for Google's Android mobile operating system that allegedly captures a handset's SIM card number, subscriber identification and voicemail password, and reportedly sends it to the website Home - Jokes Paltform, funny lift for your (http://www.imnet.us), owned by someone in Shenzhen, China.

The question is how vulnerable is the iPhone to the same sort of thing?

This could easily happen on the iPhone as well. The SDK gives access to your calendar and address book. I don't think the SIM card is accessible, but there is a unique iPhone ID that is accessible. There's not too much you can do about this, as legitimate developers need that information. The only thing Apple could do is implement a permission type system like apps that use location information. But once you grant permission, you still don't know what they're doing with it.

as legitimate developers need that information.

I thought that was not possible with the iPhone but good to know.

Why would anyone need that info? someone give me a good reason.

I am a developer and I would never look at that info.
