My nephew purchased a Macbook Pro last November from someone on EBay who said it was just one month old.
He paid the right price for it.
He forgot to ask for the receipt and emailed the person later on several times but never heard back.
He just assumed the person he bought it from was an idiot and now that he had the money he couldn't be bothered to help out anymore.
In any event, I was suggesting to him that he should invest in Apple Care for it.
My understanding is that he was able to go online somewhere and discovered that his Mac was registered, but it wasn't a month old but about 8 month old.
Also, this online page he went to also told him that he had phone support for a little while longer as well as Apple Care until 2011 or 2012 ( one or the either)
Hes now a bit concerned that maybe he bought a stolen laptop since they guy never got back to him, used a throwaway Hotmail type address which no longer works he says.
Naturally, hes a bit concerned to take advantage of this Apple Care protection plan if that is the case.
However, I read somewhere once that Apple Protection Plans, or perhaps it is the hardware itself, is not tracked, so, in other words, if per chance his laptop was stolen and he did use Apple Care, nothing wold come of it even if it was stolen and had been reported as such.
When I read that sometime ago, I recall a couple of people asking why Apple would not act as the police and report a stolen laptop and 2 people suggested that by not doing so, they ensured that extra sales took place being that the person who might have lost his Mac would then have to buy another one.
That seens to me a bit simplistic though.
In any event, this is a legitimate query and we are curious as to what would happen if it turns out his is a stolen laptop?
I am interested in legitimate answers, moral implications aside, as that is rather obvious and secondly, you would just be preaching to the choir and if anyone were considering stealing a laptop, an answer here is not going to thwart their plans, so please, I would appreciate if it someone were to give me a thorough legitimate answer??
Thanking you in advance! :)
