Hi All.

I've been having trouble with my Telus 2 Wire Gateway Wireless Router. The WiFi signal sucks, and constantly drops off.

I bought an Apple Airport Extreme, and I want to use that as the Wifi Router, and use the 2wire as a basic modem in bridge mode.

Does anyone know hoe to change the settings in the 2wire GUI to change it to a basic modem in bridge mode? I've spent hours on the phone with Telus, and they don't seem to get it. Has anyone else done this?

If you are renting the Telus modem/wireless router and have the option of not renting, I'd recommend buying a $25 modem to use with your Airport Extreme: Canada Computers - TP-LINK TD-8616, ADSL2/2+ Ethernet Modem (http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_358&item_id=024298)

If you own your Telus modem/wireless router, you could do the above and sell the Telus router.

If you are required to rent the Telus modem/wireless router, or otherwise want to keep and use it, then let it be the DHCP server and put your Airport in bridge mode. Plug the Airport into one of the Telus router's LAN ports -- I believe the Airport's WAN port could be used for this, but YMMV.

You could then either disable the wireless function of the Telus modem/wireless router, or perhaps task it as a dedicated 802.11b/g wireless network for older devices, and set the Airport to 802.11/n only for N devices.

I didn't know I could buy a third party modem and use it instead of the Telus supplied 2wire gateway wifi router.

If I were to buy this modem, I guess I would have to call Telus and register the devise with them, and de-register the 2wire? Sorry if these are basic questions, but I am a bit of a novice.

I am also still curious if I can disable the WIFI and Routing on the 2WIRE, and use it as a basic modem instead of buying a 3rd part as you suggest. I can access the GUI of the 2wire via my safari, but there are so many different settings, I'm scared to proceed.

I too have a Telus modem and an Apple Extreme base. I simply disabled the WIFI function of my Siemens Telus modem by following the advice I found here:

My Extreme is now 10 times better and stronger and never drops the signal.

I'm sure you can find instructions to do the same to your Gateway using Google.

It went something like this if I recall:

1. plug directly into the modem
2. open browser
3. goto the address 192.168.0.1
4. click setup/config
5. click advanced setup

You might find the key to turning it off that way.

In giving that advice, I generalised(!) based on the notion that DSL is DSL, and with luck Telus does not somehow lock out modems that they don't provide.

To use a DSL modem like the TP-Link in the previous post, you'll need your Telus PPoE login and password. Hopefully they provided you with that, or are willing to. There is a configuration pane in the Airport Utility where you input that login and password.

Copy ur ip address then paste it into the web browser url. The password should be telus. When it logs u in click on 2700HG-E Gateway then the page will load go to the home network tab and at the side it will say status at glance and beside the wireless icon it has a disable button then it will ask you to enter the password once again which is telus then you've just made it into a wired modem. Let me know if you need more help.

I logged into the 2wire and disabled the wifi. I have now attached the Airport Extreme to port 4 on the 2wire, and have set up the Airport Extreme to create a new wifi zone, and it seems to be belting out a pretty strong signal.

Is this all there is to do? I am assuming that the 2wire is still my router, and that the Airport Extreme is now simply creating the wifi?

I was under the impression that I had to disable the routing functions of the 2wire as well, and have the Airport Extreme do the routing, but to be honest, I really don't know what I'm talking about!

Any clarification would be appreciated.

the wifi from 2wire is now blocked it like another regular modem now, you've done everything right.

You must disable routing on either the 2wire OR the Airport. To disable routing on the 2wire requires an admin login, likely only your ISP has this password. You can put the Airport in bridge mode yourself, then just turn off the 2wire WiFi; this is the simplest solution if Wifi was your only issue.

You don't need to...

Set your internet connection on the AEBS to PPPoE, and put in your Telus PPPoE username and password. Be sure to shut off whatever you don't need on the 2wire (wireless etc.) and connect everyone to the AEBS. All done.

*Unless Telus has configured their modem drastically different than Bell. I can confirm this works with Bell, though.

I basically disabled the wifi on the 2wire, and everything is working pretty much perfectly... much stronger signal, and it never seems to drop off. I am not sure if I did something else inadvertently, but I am happy it's working. Thanks for your help everyone.
