Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Actor Peter Graves, best known for his starring role on TV's "Mission: Impossible," died Sunday. He was 83.

He is best known for playing the character Jim Phelps for all but one of the seven years "Mission: Impossible" ran on CBS, from 1967-1973. He won a Golden Globe in 1971 for his work on the show, and was also nominated for an Emmy.

Always liked him ............ and his brother, James Arness of Gunsmoke fame. Both were good actors.

And don't forget the TV series Fury and his role in Airplane!. When that Tom Cruise film franchise turned Phelps into a bad guy, I dismissed the movies entirely in defense of the upstanding character created by Graves.

Many fond memories of his acting. He will be missed.

I liked the first MI movie, regardless of what they did with a fictional character. It's when they admittedly "dumbed down" the sequels because people were confused by the first one, that I started to avoid them.

It sucks that everyone is dying. I am certainly not impressed with the celebrities that are taking these unfortunates' place.
