There is no 1.5GHz G5, but in any event, I'd be surprised if 1.4GHz G4s won't be able to run it.

This is great news! G5-processor machine sales will take off! Well, that's what the Mac zealots would say.

It's bad news for the rest of us whose machines don't meet the specs.

I'd be surprised if 1.4GHz G4s won't be able to run it. I'd be surprised if the software didn't check your machine first and spit out the DVD.

DOOM 3 is powered by one of the most detailed and realistic graphics engines ever made, and comes with some hefty system requirements (these are preliminary and may change before release) I'll bet my dualie will do the job (I hope  ).

Mine too. **puffs out chest and swaggers like he's Barney Fife**

Seriously, it would be worth a try, although I somehow think that -- as Ironmac said -- the installer will REJECT us!

If I was able to install it, my graphics card would be the big choking point, I bet. At the least, I would reboot with one monitor, so that the game gets 64MB to play with instead of 32MB (split between the dual monitors).

Actually, the system requirements seem weird! Minimum CPU is a G5. The minimum GPU is an ATI Radeon 8500... but... you can't get those as 8X AGP to run in a G5 anything... right? And, the stock G5 cards are about equal to the 8500. Aren't they?? tongue.gif

I'd be surprised if it did, actually. Chances are Doom 3 has been compiled in such a way that it'll only run on a G5 for performance reasons.

If it was Half Life 2 (which hasn't been announced for the Mac to my knowledge), I'd be upset but having already finished Doom 3 on my pc (albeit in god mode because I got really bored after only a couple of hours), I can say that you're not missing out if you don't have or plan to upgrade to a G5 of some kind...the game isn't horrible, just REALLY repetitive. It's certainly not the sole reason to upgrade.

Just my opinion but Half Life 2 is better...much better and was one of the reasons I built a relatively cheap 'gaming pc'.

Macaholic, for a Mac Zealot:

Hey! I'm a Mac zealot and I'm pissed! You should have upgraded to a new G5 a long time ago! ;)

I'm not ticked off at all because most of the games that I love playing are not on the Mac. Less time wasted...although that new Spartan game that Freeverse is selling is tempting. smile.gif

LOL! I have been too concerned with destroying the PC bigot's notion that Macs can't be upgraded.

While we're on the subject, where' a good place to buy games for the Mac? Preferably cheap as well but like everything else Mac, that ain't usually the case ;)

Anyways, any online stores in Canada that cater to the Mac gamer's? I'd like to get Call of Duty.

Yep, no doubt about it Doom 3 is all about style and visuals. Doom 3 must be played on ultra high settings to be appreciated fully that's for sure. Doom 3 is a remake of the original Doom, people thinking it was going to be really different in plot line will not like it. Doom was about killing and shooting everything, Doom 3 is no different. But it does get a little boring yes.

On a 'loaded' machine with a 21" monitor it's truly a sight to behold, I just like looking around sometimes, the work that went into the details is amazing.

For my money HL2 is it, to bad there won't be a version for Mac. Counter Strike is the most popular MP game going and they never ported that, so I doubt they are going to. HL2 looks amazing itself but in other ways than D3, and hey there's a plot line that actually has some interest.

These days it's all about MP game play anyway, and the D3 mp is pretty cool, the targeting physics really make it interesting, no more killing someone by shooting them in the foot. :D
