: iPhone, Rogers and the Bahamas
ChilBear Jul 20th, 2009, 10:45 AM We are off to the Bahamas in early Fall and I am wondering if anyone has had experience with Rogers network and email. Will the iPhone connect and will I be able to get email in Nassau? I am on the cusp of signing up for the 6GB plan but doing nothing will mean my Bell Blackberry will not connect.
HowEver Jul 20th, 2009, 10:57 AM How long will you be there?
Don't use a Canadian iPhone in the Bahamas. Roaming charges will make you very poor, or put you in debtor's prison.
Turn data roaming off on any iPhone you want to use near to, and then crossing, the border.
Better yet, buy a cheap unlocked used GSM phone and use that with a local SIM card on local pay as you go.
corey111 Jul 20th, 2009, 11:07 AM I brought my iPhone with my to Mexico this year.
I turned off Data roaming so I wouldn't see any surprises on my next bill and only used the wifi when it was available. Then I used Skype if I needed to make any calls.
Worked well for me, just check and see if wifi is available there.
ChilBear Jul 20th, 2009, 12:22 PM We are gone for a week so I was toying with using the iPhone for email responses via WiFi in the resort. I will check to see if they have an internet cafe setup to check the email for my business remotely rather than by phone.
I am also pondering holding off and seeing if Bell offers the iPhone near the Olympics. Been with Bell a very long time.

corey111 Jul 21st, 2009, 09:09 AM in order to make phone calls, you need to buy "credits" online with skype. Its SUPER CHEAP.
Then once you do that, if your connected to wifi network, you basically use skype like a real phone. Just dial the number you want and talk.

Hi cory111.
From your address,Vaughn,is that Ontario,Canada.?
From what I have learnt,Skype on my IPhone only works for texting in Canada.
I have tried using the phone feature but it doesnt work.
Any thoughts.

corey111 Jul 21st, 2009, 07:55 PM Yea Vaughan, Ontario. ("The City Above Toronto).
The Skype Phone works only over wifi.
It's free to call from Skype to Skype, and costs credits ($2 a month gets free North American Calling) to call Phones.
kungfookiller Jul 22nd, 2009, 11:40 PM I was in Nassau in January. Make sure rogers hasn't blocked international calling/texting like they did on me for some reason. After I had my family back home call for me it got cleared up and I was able to send/receive calls and texts without a problem.
As for data, make sure you have data roaming turned OFF because that's a bill you do not want. Keep in mind the calling and texting will cost quite a bit as well.
Skype only works over wifi at the moment and as mentioned above you have to purchess skype minutes to talk.
Depending on your hotel you should have some form of Internet access, although wifi everywhere isn't always the norm. I for instance stayed in Atlantis and they only had wired Internet in the rooms for a fee, and wifi in remote locations poolside. Accessing that over the iPhone was brutal :S
good luck and have fun Nassau is amazing!
