: Compromised address book
ciaochiao Jun 2nd, 2009, 09:37 PM Hello All:
Somehow, my email address book has been compromised. i have no idea as to how this happened and I have already contacted my email provider. Please ignore any email from me that links you to any sales or websites of a similar nature. I do not have an online store nor do I solicit this type of business over the internet. I apologize for any inconvenience or annoyance this has caused.
Regards,
CC
SINC Jun 2nd, 2009, 09:50 PM No issues with my e-mail at all. Best of luck with your problem.
chas_m Jun 3rd, 2009, 01:40 AM Hello All:
Somehow, my email address book has been compromised.
No it hasn't. Or at least it's EXTREMELY unlikely unless there are untrustworthy people with regular access to your account.
What this actually means is that one of your FRIENDS' **WINDOWS PCs**, someone who has your address on file, has been compromised (by a virus). It's the classic MyDoom/Novarg virus
The way this virus spreads itself is to send "zombie" emails using OTHER addresses in the address book, not the "infectee," making it harder to figure out which machine is infected.
More here:
Someone's sending from my email address! How do I stop them?! - Ask Leo! (http://ask-leo.com/someones_sending_from_my_email_address_how_do_i_st op_them.html)
macintosh doctor Jun 3rd, 2009, 02:27 PM this person has said it best "That's a very common spam technique, and reporting it will do nothing. Delete it and move on with your life. - Leo"
there is nothing you can do.. I get emails from myself all the time, selling watches, hookers, pills, extensions for the male organ also mortgages ( maybe one day i might buy from myself - all of the above )
Spammers usually just use an email in the 'name' field of the pop settings - and there you have it - you are selling junk... no one to report too and if you do - you just get more junk...
no need to panic, unless you are a PC. :)
ciaochiao Jun 3rd, 2009, 02:51 PM Hi People:
Well, thanks for the reassurance. All I can say is 'whew', thank goodness I'm not the only one. I'm still laughing at your post macintosh doc -especially when you say you'll buy from yourself one day. This has never happened to me before but I guess there's a first for everything. Do you think it could have anything to do with Safari's new version 4, public beta? I downloaded it onto my 'trusted' system-I don't know how trustworthy is really is but it has been my workhorse system-and this stuff starts. At the same time however, I've been trying to figure out a problem on my other system and because of that, have removed and changed settings/passwords, and antivirus software. So it's not really a good control, since I have no idea if it's me or Safari. I guess I could 'report' the bug to Safari but I'm just so frustrated with both issues that I haven't bothered.
Thanks again you guys, for your responses. And no, I don't have anyone really untrustworthy using my systems EXCEPT all of my kids-who use it when they're in a hurry and just need to either check their email or go post their activity on Facebook. I rarely use Facebook so I wouldn't know how their security works.

You should enforce the use of specific user accounts for each child, not that it would help with this particular problem.
Seems to me there was phishing done using Facebooks 'friends' facility just a while ago but I can't find that one. Also, this from back in December BBC - Newsbeat - Technology - Facebook users hit by virus (http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm).
The Facebook case is the latest example of hackers using social networking sites to try to cash in.
MySpace was targeted by Koobface in August.
Security experts say people are far less suspicious about viruses on sites like Facebook because you need to be a member to log in.
Facebook won't give any specifics on how many users have been hit by the virus, only saying it's a small percentage.
But they have posted some advice on the site about what to do if you come across it.
Play in social environments (networks) : get social disease.... ;)
Of course someone will make that tired argument that there are no Mac viruses () which may be true currently but there is no sense in leaving the barndoor open for the horse (so to speak) IMHO.

But I do have a mac, so I will play freely and enjoy life until they tell me - not too..
is that not the reason we have macs?
i did get the message my flash is old.. so i went directly to adobe and did the download...
:D - i guess i am smarter than the virus person. eh?
eMacMan Jun 3rd, 2009, 03:46 PM I can remember several years ago my boss was a rather thrifty Chinese lady. She figured anti-viral software was waste of money. When problems sprang up she would just start from scratch. About every 2 weeks I would tell here she was spamming people she would clear it up and it would last maybe 2 weeks. Finally suggested she keep her in and out boxes clean and create a simple spreadsheet to keep track of addresses.
Problem solved!

i assume this was a PC she used?
ciaochiao Jun 3rd, 2009, 04:23 PM Ha! To say Chinese means not having to add, 'cheap'. My Asian acquaintances stun me with their parsimonious behavior. Anyway, having said that, I'm not sure what you're telling me to do eMM. What difference will it make if I make an Excel sheet of my email addresses? I didn't lose them, just someone 'stole' the entire book and started using it for their whatever sites. I'm really hoping that clicking their link doesn't bring them to some porn site. I don't care about the porn (NORMAL porn) but instead, I dread the thought of my contacts thinking I'm deliberately sending them porn links! I haven't even gone to the site linked in my supposed emails. Anyway,....
PEOPLE, while I'm waiting for my guru, chas_m to respond, I wanted to ask if anyone here has used Disk Warrior 4.1 on their G4 with Tiger. I'm trying to get through the steps and am stuck with the spinning 'beachball' at Step 8. I have no other commands or freezes, it just keeps spinning and has been doing this for about 3.5 hours. I have done some reading and learned that some users saw their systems finishing almost a week later. And that's WITHOUT any kernel panic or hard restarts. I'm hesitant to reboot using hard restart. I have the bootable CD version of DW 4 so I just booted from the actual CD. Does anyone have any experience with the SAME issue?
Thanks again and if you want to re-direct your thread to the other thread I'm in-asking all types of dumb questions about fixing my G4 pb, please feel free. I'll post there in a bit but am overwhelmed with the things I'm facing right now. Please don't hit me for hijacking my own thread! I apologize...I'm a bit worn out right now.
BTW rgray, what type of 'social frolic condom' do you suggest then, if we are going to play in the 'networks'? I'm serious.
