so you can't post an ad unless you've been a member for 30 days and have 30 posts. (odd since this isn't a diamond and gold dealership)

what about a wanted to buy ad ? it kind of seems like shooting yourself in the foot because if you come to the forum for help all you can do is ask but can't buy a part , and how are average people supposed to get to 30 posts , does the admin really want 30 posts of fluff to get a deal going.

if you could at least post a wanted ad those people who help you for nothing can
sell you a part by visiting the wanted to buy ads every few days.

I've been reading ehmac for over 5 years. Even ran in to these guys in line at the Yorkville store opening. It's a great thing here... except for this.

I've bought over a half a dozen used things, from little parts to whole computers over the years (from newtons to G5s). When they changed their policy I paid to post "classified" posts (I think 5 times in all) and sold my super awesome cube that way. But now I can't post a classified since I don't have 30 posts! Rediculous! I mean I just don't have that much useless stuff to say!

The classifieds part of EhMac used to be the best. And the only place to look for used mac only parts and stuff for at least most of southern Ontario. But I've been getting more and more disgruntled with the site since it started messing with the classifieds.

I just want to see if someone has a used Griffin Powermate. Seriously. Do I have to prove I'm an expert on how to tear down and rebuild a macbook in under 4 minutes before I can post here.

The Classified section in its current form, is there as a benefit to contributing ehMac community members. Its not meant to be a public Craigslist or Kijiji.

There's plenty to talk about on ehMac without having to post fluff to get to 30 posts. :)

Rediculous, you say? How 'bout you post a topic on the subject of "Computer Spell Checking"? That'll get your post count up. ;) :lmao:

Ok, so I can't read or write.
I just found it kind of frustrating. I guess I've been coming here for so long that I thought I should be able to respond to someone that has a $20 connector for sale. I guess that that's just me. Too much of a lurker am I? (Poor grammar intended.)

You can still PM the seller.

Actually I think it's a good rule.

I have been a member for awhile, but read up (listen) more than contribute, as I admit that I am kinda dense about most techie stuff.
I enjoy the knowledge that others share about their Macs.

When I was in the market to purchase some parts for my iBook, I checked out the person selling as to how many posts he had, and got a good sense by reading his posts that he seemed to be someone trustworthy.

My instincts were correct and it all worked out great.

By having these rules in place I feel that this site is a safe place to buy and sell stuff, but should only be a small part of the forum.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

I guess I agree with the idea that you don't want people just trying to sell anything. In fact that's pretty important that the classifieds not just be another place for people to push stuff.

I buy a lot of used stuff on line. In fact I don't buy new gear that often. I often buy broken stuff then fix it and use it. So having a reliable safe place to buy, sell, trade, or give away parts is important too. I've bought stuff from people who's listings I've found on kijiji and craigslist too, but I've always dealt with them in person. (I find it nice to give away stuff if someone can use a part that I can't too.) In fact the only time I've had a problem buying something from a classified was about two and a half years ago when I bought a 12"powerbook screen and new bottom case from someone here on ehmac.

Ok, I was kind of desperate for screen, and the guy had a good "raiting" (or whatever was used at the time) with lots of posts to ehmac and the parts were supposed to be in super great condition. Well I should have trusted my conscience and found someone that I could meet in person. The screen was ok but after I had already paid him he said he wanted more for shipping the case. Then the case came and it was worse than the dropped and stepped on one that I was trying to replace. I feel pretty dumb. I haven't been to ehmac much since then until the last six months or so. I guess the classifieds have changed a lot since then.

Masoste, believe it or not, some people are still trying to post 30 nonsense comments so they can put a scam ad or SPAM into the classifieds. They're usuall caught somewhere around half waythrough the process--the 30 message requirement slows them down.

There used to be a ton of spam dumped into the classified. It's much better these days, but then, there has been far fewer items of interest posted as well...

"There's plenty to talk about on ehMac without having to post fluff to get to 30 posts."

maybe there is but for those that do want to spam , being dishonest and posting false questions is very easy and putting the honest person through 30 posts is a lot to ask for , some people get along fine themselves and only have 1 question for the life of their mac.

I don't subscribe to this story of spammers , spamming is easy to eliminate , I would not punish users or change things due to spamming. especially when the posts are pre approved.

but anyway , the whole point flew over everyone.. I said a WTB ad , since the forum is 90% about help and suggestions it almost goes hand in hand with buying a part afterwards. I don't really know any spammers that post WTB ads and since it is ok to come on with 1 questions and get valuable info for nothing why not be able to buy something too.

Most ehMac users appreciate that they would buy from, or sell to, someone who has been around, even this minimal time/post count. Still, people should be just as wary of a "want to buy" ad as they should a "for sale" ad or a "trade" offer.

As for spamming being easy to eliminate, spend enough time here and you'll see the "posts" or ads before they get deleted; or the threads that pose as information but are really ads/scam/spam. Search this subforum for "scammed" or "ripped off"--those threads, fortunately, now seem old.

It really is to bad a few bad apples ruined the bushel ( ;) see what I did there :lmao: ), but it's important to remember that ehMac is first and foremost a Mac forum, not a trading post. The fact that there is a Classifieds section, doesn't entitle any Joe Blow from the 'net to hock their wares here. It's a little side benefit for being a contributing member of ehMac. (See, membership does have it's privileges.) And besides, there are other places to buy and sell if you don't like it. :-(

Ok.
Spam = not good
Less real posts = not so good either

Oh well, I guess you can't make everyone happy.

Maybe in another year or two, if think real hard, and I'm really good, I'll become a real boy.
(19 more posts to go.)

I think it's good idea though. By doing this way, we have less scam in this forum try to take away our money.
