Every time I near the bottom of a thread, I now see four bookmarks and wonder what purpose they serve?
I mean really, do we need bookmarks in such a lame location when we all have a bookmarks file we've been using successfully for years?
And gimme a break with Google being a separate bookmark. In case some of you missed it, Google has been built right in to Safari for years now. (Check out the upper right corner of the Safari window if you don't believe it.) Talk about useless clutter.

Those are social bookmarks, giving one-click ability to submit to those sites you see there. I didn't actually notice them until you mentioned it. How long have they been there? Anyway, more info here: Social bookmarking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking)

:) Those are a little different bookmarks then you are thinking SINC. The Digg and other icons you see are there to allow members to share good threads / topics / discussions with other people on the internet through those sites.
Here's an example: An ehMac member reads a thread on ehMac in which another member breaks the story that Apple is going to open a new HUGE flagship store one block from where they live! "Holy Cow!", the person thinks. "I want the whole world to know this awesome bit of news!"
So, the member who read that thread clicks on the little Digg Dude icon http://www.ehmac.ca/images/misc/bookmarksite_digg.gif and submits the details of the URL to Digg. Then, other Digg visitors see the story come up on the Digg main page (http://digg.com/), or in the appropriate topic section (http://digg.com/apple) of the site. (Which is a cool place to find links about Mac info) If other Digg visitors think the story is cool, they the click "Digg it" and that thread becomes more popular on the Digg website.
In a nutshell, these new bookmark icons share URL's on ehMac with other web surfers. A lot of the fine members here found out about ehMac in a story on MacCentral, or MacSurfer etc... This is just another way of having more fine people find out about ehMac.

Would another link, a Facebook icon work/be appropriate?

Facebook not really a site to submit URL's too. The sites on the bottom of threads are geared for submitting URL's too.

Sharing links on Facebook is a very popular activity. Social bookmarking links can automatically bring up a share/post link.
