I went away for the weekend and my mac received 26 obvious spam messages from people I don't know. I use the current Adium release and chat with MSN messenger protocol. Usually the messages are "Hi I can't upload my photos but you can see them here <link>" or "Hi, I'm not online here much but I'm online here <link>". It's quite annoying these people aren't even part of my contact list.
Is anyone else having this issue? Has anyone solved it?

Hi mac-man6,
I was having a severe issue with this as well - the solution is to log into your MSN account on either Microsoft Messenger for Mac or even Windows Live Messenger if you have a PC available and change your privacy status. (Download for Microsoft Messenger: Office for Mac - Easy Access to Downloads and Updates | Mactopia (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?pid=Mactopia_Messenger&fid=E3F79AE4-7B7C-42AB-89C0-EC5F513C24F3#viewer))
In the preferences on Microsoft Messenger, choose the Privacy tab and select "Only users on my Allow List yadda yadda". This will then block anybody not on your list from sending you messages unless you add them to your contact list.
You can then trash Microsoft Messenger if you'd like.

Actually, you can change your privacy status right from Adium:
Adium menu > Privacy Settings > *select account, or simply "All"* > Privacy level: Allow only contacts on my contact list.
Spam problem solved.

Yeah, those spam messages are/were really annoying.
I missed the 'Privacy Settings' since they didn't put it in Preferences, but instead gave it it's own menu...
Thanks.. problem solved (for me). :)

It seemed odd that the Privacy settings would have been missing in Adium - I looked under the Preferences countless times in hopes I was missing something when it was in front of me the entire time. Thanks macsackbut! I can now wipe egg off my face.

Yeah, I thought that was strange too. I guess the developers thought they were making access to the privacy settings easier, when in fact they ended up hiding them in plain sight!
