: iPhone for $199? (bah!)
mpuk Jun 11th, 2008, 09:16 AM Just about nothing on a retail level (even with the almost equal value of our money) is priced the same. Whether its cars, electronics, hardware or disposable furniture from Ikea, the US is still cheaper, and in some cases, MUCH cheaper.
What's to say the iPhone won't start at $249 or $299 for Canadians with a mandatory contract? I'm not doubting lower data rates, but given the hype and the really dorky way they are marketing it (Something BIG is coming July 11....wonder what?) They know people want it and can gouge on the hardware. I'm guessing the 16GB version i'm eyeing will be $399 via Rogers.
satchmo Jun 11th, 2008, 09:23 AM I can see $249, but that would be max. Jobs said that carriers would be all pricing it at around $199 so to jack it up anything more would really show Rogers greed.
(not that it needed any more proof).
It'll probably be $229 and $339 respectively...and then the real gouge will be in the data plans.

I agree, they will kill us on the data plans, I hope they have minimal data plan like $10 a month extra for 1 GB (yep wishful thinking) that you can top up on your current plan. I have an awesome Voice plan that I would hate to kill.
RunTheWorldOnMac Jun 11th, 2008, 09:32 AM What's to say the iPhone won't start at $249 or $299 for Canadians...
Steve Jobs actually said it @ WWDC; he said the maximum price "world-wide" would be $199US.
Now, is this on a contract or from the Apple store itself; who knows. Did Rogers make a deal that Apple doesn't sell the phone for the first year; who knows.
Cor roC Jun 11th, 2008, 09:41 AM Hey gang,
newbie questions coming right up, but I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out.
I don't know exactly what a "data" plan entails... I'm assuming, text msgs, e-mails.. and what else?
If I have an iPhone and am perusing the web/checking my e-mail using the Wi-Fi service offered by the coffee shop I'm in, am I getting charged for all this activity? Wouldn't it be free.. as I'm using the free wi-fi service, just as if I was surfing on a laptop?
That's where I get confused. If someone could help clarify, I'd appreciate it big time.
Cheers

I'd have to see it to believe it. Something doesn't add up when Rogers isn't advertising in a similar way that AT&T and Apple are, telling us at least the price of the phone with service rates to come... Why hide the price of the phone if its going to be the same?

I'll answer your question this time, but don't hijack threads!!!!
Sure, wifi is free...but when you use the cellular network to download and browse the web (i.e. in your car) you get charged.
Cor roC Jun 11th, 2008, 09:45 AM That's what I kinda thought. Thank you very much and I apologize for interrupting your thread
HowEver Jun 11th, 2008, 10:05 AM On Rogers...
Receiving text messages is free (the first 2500, anyways). Sending them is charged according to your text messaging plan (not a data plan).
Wifi is of course free, as pointed out above.
Rogers is likely to *require* a data plan when purchasing the iPhone. Their current $7 unlimited "Vision" plan appears to work for most any purpose, wap as well as html browsing (sites for cell phones, regular sites also). But as a data hog, the iPhone plan will likely cost more, possibly much more.
Data = viewing web pages, sending web-based email. It's not known yet whether data streaming (like listening to internet radio) will be included.
You will *not* be able to tether the iPhone to a laptop and use the iPhone's internet/data connection while browsing through the laptop.

Sorry to continue the threadjack OP but the agreement is for $199/$299 worldwide.

I once attended an event with Ted Rogers presenting and "greed" is the right word. He's unabashed about his own avarice and chortles with glee at the thought of more profits.

And gives more to charity than many small countries. Your point?

Well, that's the first "official statement" i've seen online...cool...but 3 year contract? Hope they do offer a price without the contract as well...

As expected. (I don't mind contracts overly much.) However, let's wait and see what their data plans will cost...

Just about everything else isn't equal. Songs and iPhone now, are a nice surprise though...

i doubt they will offer it w/o a contract. it's a source of continuing revenue for them. I bet they're not making much on the iphone itself, but it's the service afterwards, that makes the bucks. i have no idea....just a hunch.
BigDL Jun 11th, 2008, 11:03 AM Well, that's the first "official statement" i've seen online...cool...but 3 year contract? Hope they do offer a price without the contract as well...How Rude! Admonish others about threadjacking and then feel free to post a question of contract free purchase of an iPhone. This thread questions price point $American. Not detials.

Speaking of rude smart a**, you have absolutely nothing positive to add to this thread, and are merely just starting s***, so why are you even commenting?
I answered his question mid-thread, but simply did not want to go completely off topic as i started this thread for a reason. Big deal. I don't think that was very harsh at all. As if no one else has ever been scolded for breaking forum etiquette, asking dumb questions or starting duplicate threads...
Beyond that, I hadn't read anything about Rogers confirming the hardware price. A few members pointed me to news releases etc., so my concerns were answered. If I choose to comment (and not pose a question) on contracts after the fact in a thread I started, that's my business....myself and many other Rogers customers included i'm sure can vouch that getting out of a contract when you need to (for whatever reason) can be an expensive pain in the a**. It has direct relation to the price-point Rogers is offering the phones at. There are lots of people out there that would pay an extra hundred or even $200 to avoid a contract. Much cheaper than the $200 + they charge to terminate a contract last I checked.
BigDL Jun 11th, 2008, 01:07 PM ...you have absolutely nothing positive to add to this thread,... Yeah I do!

Sorry again to all good members of ehmacland for the interruption and I hereby vow to rerail this thread.
I shall only comment further to say the price that Apple has set for the iPhone is 8GB for $199 USD and to point out, if past performance is any indicator of future actions, then the 8GB iPhone shall be marketed in Canada for that amount.
Any difference between the USA and Canada will be in the details of the "service" contract that its sold with. That's all need said about that.
