: How does High-Speed Wireless work?

Despite where we live not having any support for "lined" high-speed, where we live does, however, support wireless high-speed Internet with speeds up to 2MB/second - by the same provider in which we currently have dial-up service from. The question is, how does wireless high-speed work, exactly?

Some people have suggested in the past that wireless Internet is slow, but from our provider, it looks very promising and has already gotten "raving" reviews.

It costs $75/month (including $25 eqiuppment rental fee), plus a $200 setup fee.

Thoughts?

if it's what i'm thinking of it's a weird system.

it still requires a phone line and a 56k modem. the modem is used to contact the server for the web page, but the page content is downloaded through the satellite.

your upload speed is limited by the 56k modem. that's if it's the same technology as the Bell wireless high speed i see advertised in ontario, and i don't know enough about it to say that it is.

I checked out a few more details of it, and it's not like the Bell service in Ontario... it doesn't require a 56k modem or a phone line. I believe the equippment they rent out to you is a modem (satellite receiver) which then distrubutes the wireless signal throughout your house; or you can hook up a router to it for hard-lined Internet through your house.

Not entirely sure, though.

Lincsat (http://www.lincsat.com) is another satellite based option. It is bi-directional so a phone line backfeed is not required as was necessary with previous satellite offerings. A rural friend of mine uses it and is very pleased with it, however it's not exactly cheap.

I have a high-speed wireless DSL system. Is that what you're talking about? There is a transmitter on the local water tower (I live in a rural area) and I have a receiver panel on my window which faces in the direction of the tower. It's quite fast, and I never have any problems with it. I'm not sure how it compares with other high-speed but for an average download I get about 200 k/s. Supposedly the useable range is about 20 km. The setup is quite simple, you just need a small window panel receiver (or small outdoor dish) that point in the direction of the transmitter (it's provided as part of the monthly fee). For me it costs $45/mth. My provider is Quadro Communications.

Lars, the one you're talking about may be faster, but it's probably fairly similar to what I have, except mine has no installation fee and is $30 / month cheaper.

lars, get it. there is nothing worse than a pokey dialup internet connection - i know, because i just got off of it last week after being stuck on it for 6 months. we moved to the one block in toronto that didn't have high speed internet.

Yeah, I'd say get it, except you've got to risk that installation charge. Hope it's speedy.
