: Simple automated FTP app?
tgilas Jan 14th, 2008, 08:29 AM Hello all.
Can anyone suggest a simple app that would automatically ftp my critical files to an off site server? I have tried ableftp but it is too complex for me.
Thanks
tg
chas_m Jan 14th, 2008, 08:30 AM Backup. Free to .Mac members.
MacBookPro Jan 14th, 2008, 12:16 PM If you had said that you wanted to upload your files to a .Mac account, I would agree with the first responder.
You obviously do not have, nor are interested in, a .Mac account, so..
I use http://www.fetchsoftworks.com/extensively, but it is not free.
I have heard good reports about the free Fetch -- the Mac OS X FTP/SFTP Client (http://www.fetchsoftworks.com/)
darkscot Jan 14th, 2008, 12:47 PM I use Transmit and love it. Very easy to setup, even has a widget. Made by Panic.

Automator could do it. Look in the files or folders actions:
Step 1 - Get Specified Servers. Enter the ftp site and path you want to dump the files to
Step 2 - Connect to servers.
Step 3 - Get Specified Finder items - select the files (or folders) you want copied.
Step 4 - Copy Finder Items - in "To:" you specify the ftp path you just mounted.
There are other parameters you can set at each step.

While you COULD (and likely are) right, I'm curious as to how you KNOW this based on the post ... most .Mac members are COMPLETELY unaware of Backup ime, and are delighted when they discover it.
PS. The alternatives suggested (like Transmit etc) are also good!
MacBookPro Jan 14th, 2008, 02:42 PM Oh I don't know, how 'bout when you tell me how you know "most .Mac members are COMPLETELY unaware of Backup"?
johnnyspade Jan 14th, 2008, 03:06 PM I use Transmit for FTP and it's very good. If you are looking for an online backup service, I have had good success with Mozy though it's fair to warn you that some other Leopard users have not.

You're right, I should have said "most .mac users that I encountered at my store in Florida, which numbered in the hundreds."
Sorry.
Now, about your claim ...

That's totally understandable, since most of these same people are also COMPLETELY unaware that the world as they know it, does not cease to exist at the 49th parallel.

jamesB Jan 14th, 2008, 06:29 PM Did a quick Google search and found this...
http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/features.html
sounds like it might do what you need, and for free too.

Orion Jan 14th, 2008, 08:23 PM While I have never set it up to do exactly what you are suggesting, Cyberduck is a decent FTP application and is able to be used in conjunction with Applescript and Automator. It even has its own widget so you can quickly grab files and fire them off to a preset site of your choosing.
Cyberduck | FTP for Mac OS X. (http://cyberduck.ch/)
Were you looking to have the files transferred at, say, 11pm every night automatically, or did you want to select the files and then press a button and have them head off-site?
tgilas Jan 14th, 2008, 09:15 PM Orion
Right. Every night at x o'clock I want my file ( my quicken stuff) to go to my web site on sympaticos server. Free space there. ried Transmit/Fetch combined with Automator but still not bright enough to get a solution working. Actually used Rerospect in the past and it worked OK in Pre Leopard days but it's a no go to.
Thank you all for your suggestions.
Yours Sincerely
