: Steve Jobs RETIRING!!

Gooootchaaaaaa :lmao:

But while you're here, this thread is to discuss what might happen WHEN Steve Jobs packs it in. Born in 1955, Mr. Jobs is currently 52 years old... at best -- if he wanted to -- he could keep going for another ten years. But SOME DAY he'll be gone. The questions are:

1) Best guess as to the state of Apple at that time (let's say ten years from now... double the Mac market-share? $20bln in cash on hand? iJetpacks #1 seller??)?

2) What will happen to Apple?

3) WHO TO REPLACE HIM?? (my vote: Johnnie Ives)

Why is there any "need" for Jobs to retire - 62 is very young. Many CEOs are active well into their 80s.

He might CHOOSE to...but I suspect the world is still not entirely to his liking so he will remain "chief world changer and spin meister" for a good while yet.

1/ In ten years, Apple will dominate the personal computer market - 99% of intelligent computer users will own a Mac. Oh wait... that's now!

2/ Upon Steveo's retirement, folks like me will rush out to buy the top-of-the-line Mac, before the company goes bust.

3/ I too like Jonathan Ives, but is he up to the task of CEO? By that time, Microsoft will buy Apple and Balmer will be in charge. Hence my reply to item #2.

;)

+1 lol

And they'll keep a whole bunch of other clones hidden in strategic places around the world to keep an eye on MS/SUN/Google/etc... ;)

Thanks for the gun to the head image. I believe that would get you booted from an Ontario high school these days.

If this thread didn't invite comments, from relevant to spurious, from obtuse to informational, you wouldn't have posted it. Welcome once again to the interweb. You've commented on my posts 100s of times without being asked to move on.

And in the words of your favourite erstwhile politician, "I'm Nobody's Baby." (Although, technically, I am, I guess. Just not yours, or John Crosbie's.)

Also in 2009: Canadians, unable to hack the $120 laptop for use in Canada, look for ways to unlock it for use as a large hand-cranked cell phone.

That's because when I post I contribute something to the ACTUAL TOPIC OF DISCUSSION; not just waste space saying I hate or am not interested in the topic.

You have NO IDEA as to my political leanings because I have probably posted in political "Everything Else" threads maybe five times since I registered in January of 2003. See? If I'm not interested in a topic... I don't post. I don't pollute it, saying how I disapprove of the thread's existence. Get it?

Literalists are boring. And by commenting on my comment at length you seem to be doing exactly what you say you dislike, again. It was a joke. Sometimes they work. Personally, I don't care how old Steve Jobs is and I know many people who take such references to be ageist. I have known some older people who go for jobs and although the reference is never made, they know they aren't considered after the interview because of their age (younger people also). And I'm not suggesting Steve will be pulling a Hugh Hefner and staying around until he's 80 something, but I don't want to assume he's going anywhere soon also. I vote for keeping Jobs on at Apple. I respect old people. Most of them at least.

Oh please. Get real.

At the risking of sucking all the joviality out of this thread -- I believe you may have beat me to it -- I too think that there should be no age limit to one's ability or opportunity to work. The point of my thread is WHEN he goes... who could replace him? But just NEVER MIND.

There are very few with the kind of vision Jobs has...and even fewer who can make them come to fruition.

Until the next best thing...here's to Apple and Steve Jobs.

Indeed

Almost a year ago, we blogged a piece from the LA Times suggesting that the oldest worker in the U.S. is Ella Clarke Nuite of Georgia, who at the age of 101 still works every day at her family's bottled water business.

Entirely by chance, we now know this to be untrue. On holiday in the U.S. last week, our editor happened to be passing Rockmount Ranch Wear, a Western clothing store located in a stunning restored Victorian warehouse in Downtown Denver's LoDo area.

Fancying a new shirt, he met Jack Weil, the company's founder and CEO who, at an astonishing 104 years old, still goes into work every day because, as he put it, "what else am I supposed to do all day?"

Jack - known by his employees and family as "Papa Jack," has been described as "being to western wear what Henry Ford is to the car". And – inadvertently quoting our own Dan Bobinski - he added: "when you love what you do, it isn't work".

Still producing the overwhelming majority of his shirts and clothing in the U.S., Jack also refuses to sell through chain stores or discounters – pouring particular scorn on Wal-Mart, whose founder, Sam Walton, he described as "nothing but a hillbilly", as well as JC Penney, both of whom he holds responsible for the destruction of America's garment manufacturers and wholesalers.

The secret of his longevity? Apart from the love of his job, he quit smoking at the age of 60, drinking at 90 and eating red meat when he was 100.

and Jobs stopped eating meat much earlier ;)

Timothy Cook (current COO) is already the fill in guy, so I'd say that he's the best bet for next CEO.

Still in the big picture a niché player, but larger - I'd guess 15% market share tops for computers under the assumption desktop computers will still be viable. Phones, and portable electronics - the iPhone, iPod and even the Apple TV have converged in that one device can be used to wirelessly access your TV Wall and show your shows while keeping you connected. ;-)

2) What will happen to Apple?
Buy Granny Smith Inc., Open headquarters in Fiji on McIntosh Drive.

3) WHO TO REPLACE HIM?? (my vote: Johnnie Ives)
Easy, Tim Cook - he already has once, and while he's not very public he is instrumental in the running of Apple.

In ten years time, Apple will have close to 20% world-wide market share. This is based on their current position of 3%, and an assumption that Apple Mac unit sales will continue to exceed the industry's growth by 20%.
Apple will be the dominant brand in consumer electronics and computers. They will become a much bigger player in the software market, and if they hit a market share wall, will license their OS out to select third party OEMs under very favorable terms. Steve Jobs will still be running the company.
When Steve does step down, I don't know who will take over for him, but I suspect it will be someone we don't expect. Jonathan Ives doesn't seem to be CEO material, and Tim Cook might be too much of a bean counter to fill Jobs' gigantic shoes. All I know is the day Steve Jobs leaves, for any reason, I'm selling all my AAPL shares, 'cause their value is going to take a big hit, probably 20-30%.

The brainwashed masses are never going to trust us if we can't keep a level head on a completely hypothetical discussion.

Yeah. Well, the thread title was a jest, the thread itself is a waste-of-bandwidth, harmless little lark, and my statement being taken as "agesim" was TOTALLY NOT intended to mean that. What I was intimating was, as Jobs is rich enough to stop working right now, he probably has the desire to continue for quite a while but can at any time -- and I threw ten years from now out just as a token example which isn't even the old, dreaded 65 -- choose to stop working at ANY time he doesn't feel like working anymore. Like, there comes a time for most people when they might just choose to stop working. Isn't there? I know I have such a moment in my future, way down the road.

I meant NOTHING AT ALL that anybody SHOULD stop working at ANY age -- I don't believe in that archaic tradition, myself -- but the problem occurred when some folks jumped to a conclusion based on my insufficiently clarified wording... or absence of some kind of legal disclaimer or something. I regret that this happened and am in NO WAY an "ageist" :)

Now EVERYBODY BACK TO WORK! :D
