: What do you think of this monitor?
wonderings Mar 15th, 2007, 11:31 AM I am looking for a new screen, I currently have the Samsung 172x screen. Great screen, but I will be bringing it to work to use in reception. What do you think of this monitor:

I would like a widescreen, and dvi is a must. I not the brand NEC but not sure of there reputation.
The other option is this:

My other monitor is a Dell and I am very pleased with it, I got it from work. The only thing I am nervous about is Dells return policy if there is a dead pixel. With Future Shop or Best Buy, I can return the monitor for any reason, even if its only 1 dead pixel.
thanks
krs Mar 15th, 2007, 12:17 PM I bought a Dell 19-inch monitor and had no trouble having it replaced - but it was more that the picture wasn't as good as I expected.
Turned out after some research on RFD that the same model Dell monitor came with two different LCD panels for a while - one was Samsung and the other AUO. The samsung panel was much better than AUO although the AUO by itself looked OK, one only saw the difference when you put the two units next to each other.
I usually go for a monitor during the Dell days - you can get some great deals that way. The higher end De''s have a built in 4-port powered USB hub which I find much more useful that the crappy speakers you usually get with monitors - the Dells also have a great swivel stand that allows you to rotate the monitor 90 degrees.
The next monitor I will go for is a 22-inch wide screen - that way I kkep the vertical screen dimension of the 19-inch LCD monitor. A 19-inch LCD widescreen would actually be smaller (in height) than the 19-inch one I have now.
guytoronto Mar 15th, 2007, 12:25 PM Warranty, warranty, warranty. Where can it be repaired / exchanged hassle-free? How long is the warranty? Those are two of the most important questions I always ask when buying a monitor.
wonderings Mar 15th, 2007, 12:31 PM Thats why I am nervous buying from Dell guytoronto. Anyone delt with them on a return, were they easy to deal with?

I have dealt with them on a return for a 2405fpw LCD that wouldnt turn on anymore and it was painless. After going through the basic trouble shooting (trying different wires, computers, power outlets, etc) they shipped me a replacement one and had me use the box from it to send the dead one back. They covered all the shipping costs.
Now if you're returning it because you dont like it, then it may be a different story.
wonderings Mar 15th, 2007, 01:50 PM well I dont think I would be returning if because I dont like it, just if there was a dead pixel, even one dead pixel is to many for me .
HowEver Mar 15th, 2007, 02:32 PM In this case buying online is a very, very bad idea, for you.
You definitely want to buy a monitor in person, and from a place like FutureShop or BestBuy or CostCo. There you can return the monitor for any reason at all within 30 days (or perpetually, in the latter case). You just can't say it's the pixel problem that's the issue.
Anywhere else you will run into the 7 (or thereabouts) minimum dead pixel rule--including Apple. No one will RMA a monitor with a few dead pixels.
So this narrows down your choice somewhat.

wonderings Mar 15th, 2007, 02:55 PM Thanks However, thats what I needed. I will not buy a Dell monitor. Any suggestions for a good widescreen lcd with dvi from futureshop or bestbuy?
mikef Mar 15th, 2007, 04:25 PM FWIW, NCIX (http://ncix.com) has good prices (bonus: no PST if you're not in BC) and has a nominally priced dead pixel warranty.

Ditto.
For an additional $15, you can purchase an over the counter return policy as well, so that if you have even ONE dead pixel, you can exchange the LCD.
I got my 20" Flatron L204WTX for a good price at NCIX and generally recommend either Samsung or LG.
I'm not a fan of NEC and would steer clear of Dell unless the price is terrific. beejacon
krs Mar 15th, 2007, 10:39 PM What makes anyone think you can't return a Dell monitor? That is totally wrong.
I exchanged one of mne without any hassles at all and I know of other people who have done the same thing.
The 19-inch Dell monitor I got also came with a 3-year warranty.
Of all the monitors I have ever looked at, the Dell gives the the best bang for the buck by far if you take advantage of the 'Dell Days' deals.
wonderings Mar 15th, 2007, 10:42 PM what was the reason for your exchange?
applebook Mar 15th, 2007, 11:22 PM Also, how much shipping did you have to pay to return it?
krs Mar 15th, 2007, 11:42 PM what was the reason for your exchange?
I told them I found the colours somewhat washed out (which was true, turned out later it was due to a 6-bit panel)
Also, how much shipping did you have to pay to return it?
Nothing - shipping was free when I bought the original monitor, a second one was shipped free and the one I returned was also picked up for free.
The transaction with Dell was excellent; the monitor I now have is excellent - the only thing I don't like in the monitor (and I'm pretty fussy) is the Dell logo on the front (reminds me too much of Dell PCs used in the office). Luckily it's not too visible. :lmao:
