: Quickbooks training

A friend is looking to learn how to use Quickbooks. She signed up for a course at Langara College, but didn't realize it would be in a PC lab using the PC version. She has never used Windows and found this to be too much of a barrier to try and convert what she is learning from the Windows version to using Quickbooks on her Macs so she withdrew from the course after the first lesson.

I kind of doubt that she would be able to find classroom instruction in Vancouver teaching Quickbooks just for Mac users. If anyone knows of anything please let me know.

I think her best option might be to buy a DVD course, but I think most would be from the US and wouldn't include some of the Canadian specific things. Does anyone have any personal recommendations on Quickbooks training DVDs or online courses?

Thanks in advance.

Here's one for Quickbooks 2000. At $30 USD per month seems pretty good.

Off course it's based on system 9 and doesn't have that aqua look, but it is for mac!

As Intuit Canada has abandoned QuickBooks for Mac, there is nothing that she'll find for training. It's basically become a non-product. Small business accounting for the Mac in Canada is one of the biggest problems that we have.

There are published books that I've seen in Chapters that are written specifically for QuickBooks for Mac. I did find:

this one. (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/item/books-978032134894/032134894X/QuickBooks-Pro-2006-for-Macintosh?ref=Search+Books%3a+'quickbooks')

Hope this helps,

I thought that there was some accommodation made in the US Mac version for Canadian users. I looked at it briefly and there was some mention of GST.

GST is a bit of a kludge compared to what MYOB had. And compared to what is available in Windows versions of QuickBooks and Simply Accounting.

Also, and this is a biggie for me, there is no support for multiple currencies. Even the Americans and Brits have been complaining on the user forums about this. I got around it by manually creating the extra accounts, and manually creating an extra journal transaction whenever I do a US transaction.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for your responses and suggestions everyone. I've given my friend the URL of this thread so she can read it.

I was just wondering what version she's using? You didn't say. Is it the American version, an older Canadian version? I know the 2006 and 2007 version of QBs has a tutorial cd included.

Yeah, the lack of multiple currency support is a drag, it's one of the reasons I haven't upgraded from the New User Edition.

Good Luck!

Oh where oh where is MYOB again when you need them. There have been rumours about their return. I remember of beloved Mayor had talked to someone from MYOB US during one of his trips down there.

I would love to see them return to Canada.

She's bought 2006 and it does have the tutorial with it. She's now looking at it, but I doubt if it could be as effective as a hands-on course. That may be what she'll have to settle with.

She contacted Simply Computing — a big Mac store in Vancouver — and although they offer a lot of Mac courses, they have nothing on Quickbooks.

I guess the problem is that the Canadian Mac user base is just too small for a lot of these big companies to support separate Canuck versions. But with growing Mac marketshare and good projections into the future you would think that there would be an opening for someone.

How many Canadian Mac users are there I wonder? If the installed base is true with recent estimates of 22 million worldwide, how many would be Canucks — 2 million? You'd think that out of that there would be an opportunity for someone, maybe a smaller player, to sell many thousands of copies.

As I understand it, we're a pretty rich country, because we happen to own 30% of home computers around the world. If we took that number literally and put it to macs, we'd have 6.6 million here. So, at least 2.

This thread got me looking again and I downloaded a demo of MoneyWorks Express. I tried it before, but didn't like the feel, but This newer version seems smoother, and the newest is just being prepared to demo. We'll see. I just don't like relying on someone who seems to like to play games i.e. Quickbooks.

Let us know if she finds anything!
