I'm looking for an *inexpensive* cross platform drawing solution. Illustrator is too expensive and overkill for what I need.

Something like Cadintosh would be perfect, but it is Mac only.

Anyone know if AppleWorks is cross platform?

AppleWorks works for Windows as well, yep.

If AppleWorks will do the trick, it's perfect. ClarisWorks/AppleWorks has always been x-platform since at least version 3.0 (10 years ago). You can buy both versions at the AppleStore.

Apparently AppleWorks is no longer cross platform. Apple only.

but I have found Star Office and Open Office. If I can get Open Office to work on my Mac, that might be a solution.

Would Corel Draw suit your budget and needs? It's definately cross-platform, and just as good as Illustrator. And Canadian!

Somebody doesn't know the difference
between Corel Draw and Illustrator.

Actually, I do. Been using both for years, but chose to buy Corel over Illy.
