I've gotta say, I'm a BIG fan on the iPod updater being built into iTunes. I think it's wonderful that when I plug in my iPod, it alerts me that a new software update is available. Much more practical than it showing up in the Macintosh Software Updater and then being a stand-alone program.

Just thought I'd say that I'm pleased by the decision on Apple's behalf on integrating the updater straight into iTunesa. Anyone agree?

Bravo Apple.

Downside: sometimes if your iPod is going on the fritz, the computer will recognize it (as a drive) but iTunes won't. Having the updater built into iTunes means you can't restore it.

so what you do is restore using the old standalone updater, then open itunes and restore using the current software version
