Doubtful it will be the next PowerMac chip. Good possibility it will be used in the XServe though since this is a server chip. Most analysts and rumor sites expect the new PowerMac (or Mac Pro) to use the Intel Core 2 Duo.

Most rumor sites I've been to think it's a toss-up between woodcrest and conroe. From what I've read Conroe doesn't support SMP, only Woodcrest? So if Apple makes a dual processor (or a Quad as it is called), they would have to use Woodcrest. The price of Woodcrest would certainly meet Apple's price.

The new processor family launches in the following lineup:

Xeon DP 5110: 1.60 GHz, FSB1066, 4 MB L2 cache, $209
Xeon DP 5120: 1.86 GHz, FSB1066, 4 MB L2 cache, $256
Xeon DP 5130: 2.00 GHz, FSB1333, 4 MB L2 cache, $316
Xeon DP 5140: 2.33 GHz, FSB1333, 4 MB L2 cache, $455
Xeon DP 5150: 2.66 GHz, FSB1333, 4 MB L2 cache, $690
Xeon DP 5160: 3.00 GHz, FSB1333, 4 MB L2 cache, $851

in quantities of 1000

Maybe Apple will use a mix of conroe (for the low-end PowerMac) and Woodcrest (for the high-end PowerMac).

I think that they'll stick with the Conroe in the iMac and put maybe 1 or 2 models of the Woodcrest in the 2-3 models of the MacPro.

FWIW, the Xeon (Woodcrest) is not a server-only chip. Every major PC company makes a (pro) desktop based on the Xeon chip.

I can guarantee that it won't be the next PowerMac Chip - if for the only reason that Apple isn't making "PowerMacs" ever again. :)

Kosh has got it right I think. It will anchor the top line in the quad proc space and there will be a low end Conroe-based dualie. Mid range???

It will debut in the XServe in July though.
