: iTunes just won't play nothin'

It's been ages since I've used iTunes. A few weeks ago I upgraded to 6.0.4 from an earlier version - 5-point-something, maybe? I think this is the first time I've tried to use it since the upgrade.

Tonight I was trying to import some songs from a few CDs and discovered that it won't play anything, CDs, podcasts, internet radio stations, and songs previously in my iTunes library. It did import the music from the CDs OK, it just won't play them. But they are in my iTunes library and will play from the Finder. When I attempted to play anything using iTunes the app quits immediately.

I repaired permissions, no help. Should I - and can I - trash iTunes and re-instal it - and not lose my iTunes library?

I'm on a G4 Sawtooth PowerMac, OS X 10.3.9, 3rd party combo drive enabled with Patchburn. Thanks in advance.

It's pretty easy to reinstall without losing anything

1) Trash any prefs files but keep your music folder intact
2) Reinstall iTunes from a fresh download
3a) If you simply want to play all your music but are happy to lose your playlists etc, simply drag your music collection to the library yellow icon in the left part of the iTunes window (application open)
3b) If you want the whole thing to be intact, then go to the preferences and indicate to iTunes where the songs and iTunes library are. If that doesn't work, then you may have to go for (3a)

You should probably take the preferences (from your Music folder in your user folder) and copy them somewhere else so that you can preserve all of your playlists. Just reinstall iTunes and see what comes up.

Good luck !

It's been a while since I reported this problem and I haven't had time to post much, but I thought I would update this for anyone who might be interested - maybe having a similar problem.

I didn't re-install iTunes, but the following week I upgraded to Tiger, which I had been planning to do for months and which I guess would have re-installed iTunes along with it. Anyway the problem is gone and iTunes seems to be working normally.
