: Price check on a G5 tower

Machine purchased last September, in exellent condition.

G5 Dual Processor 2.3Ghz with 5.5 Gig Ram, 2X250Gb Sata HDs, Ati X800XT 256Mb GDDR3 AGP card, 16XDL-Super Drive. No monitor included.

I was hoping tat I could sell this machine before the price drops too a certain point, by then I would keep the machine for sentimental reasons rather than selling it.

And I was wondering will the Quard be the very last generation G5 tower? If tat is the case I would definetly wanna sell my DP 2.3Ghz to get a quard right now before the price of my tower drops too significantly.

Thank you for your opinions.

The quad will most likely be the last high-end G5 tower ... who knows they may bump it to 4x2.7 GHz cores ... the quad is an awesome machine ... as far as I'm concerned the G5s are the best machines out there, I have zero interest in Intel at the moment. It amazes me how quickly people are jumping onto Intel Macs even though none of the major apps run natively on them. And I don't call iLife a major app. Someone on ehMac was impressed the other day because Rosetta "only" reduced performance by between 20-60 percent ... that's a huge performance hit either way - not sure what's so impressive about that. The quad is a good value pro machine. I'm currently running an 18 hour batch render [@ 400% CPU] on mine and can multi-task like a champ with no noticable performance hit - incredible. It's a real heavy-hitter. It amazes me how little attention it gets ... people go gaga over a Mac Mini, but the Quad barely receives any attention - hmmm?

I would say your machine is worth $2500.00 +/- ... given that it's about 6 months old. You won't regret your decision to get a quad ... it's really quiet too.

2500+/- eh? I know a new Dual-core 2.3Ghz is only 2999 and comes with PCI-Express and DDR2 memory, but wouldn't the X800XT video card and 5.5 Gigs of ram boost the selling price of my tower up just a little?

I wouldn't buy anything from someone who can't even use a spell-checker.:yikes:

Sorry missed the GPU and RAM ... try $2800 [max]... the extra HDD isn't really worth anything, but is an added bonus.

You have to remember that there are multiple markets for a computer - pro, consumer, pro-consumer. Yeah a Quad is the be-all and end-all for a pro, but for a consumer that doesn't need all that power or for a multi-media center it's a over-priced big honking chunk of metal that's overpowered and over-sized for what they need (don't get me wrong, I love my G5 PM). Also, Mac users always go gaga over the latest thing, whether they need it or not.

As for Intel, it's the future of the Mac, and if Steve Jobs is going to have the whole Mac line converted to Intel by the end of this year, it's likely he'll have at least the Apple Pro apps native on Intel by that time too. Adobe will probably be soon after that since they have no current plans yet ( http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/02/01/adobes.mac.commitment/ ). And my guess is if the speed bumps that Steve Jobs is hyping are anyway near true, even you will want a new Quad Intel machine with the new desktop Intel chips - remember that the current Intel Core Duo chips are only laptop and compact desktop chips, the Intel chip targetted for the PowerMac will likely be clocked higher and even more powerful than the Intel Core Duo.

Selling the ram seperately would yeild more than $300 likely.

I'm quite aware of all that, but for now iLife 2006 is about the only app[s] that runs natively on OSX Intel ... even as just a "consumer" that wouldn't be enough to justify the switch [for me] - yet. Yes, the Quad is really powerful, but my 1.25 GHz PowerBook was the other extreme and could barely do the "consumer" tasks I wanted to do ... like run HD content [a no-go for the PowerBook] ... the spinning beach ball was a regular affair.

9mmCensor has a good point ... often computers are more valuable as the sum of their parts ... you could yank the RAM and sell separately or give two different prices based on w or w/o the RAM ...

I usually check Craigslist for prices on Apple items, and I've recently noticed a bunch of G5 towers going for around $1,000. Now I realize that there's a lot of potential for scamming, but is there an Intel-mania going on here, with a glut of used G5 products entering the market? I realize that used computer stores are selling these computers for twice that, but have no idea what price they might be offering to people bringing them in.

Logical or not, the G5 line of PMs is going to take a huge hit in resale once the intel towers come out.
May not make sense, but that is what will happen.
Adobe will release Photoshop later this year or early next year.
Sell now before the rumours start to fly about a possible release date as people will wait to buy the new latest thing.
File it under strange but true.

Not likely - the towers may well go UP in value and the people buying horsepower have a bit more sense than "new is always better".

I don't think they'll go down too drastically. You have to realize, though, that your computer is getting older. The oldest of the G5's WAS released 3 years ago. The newer G5's which were released under a year ago, should be okay, as they at least have PCI Express graphics. I've never had trouble, yet, selling a 3 year old computer. Not everyone wants the latest and greatest.
