: Is the optical drive in the iMac G4 replaceable?

Before anybody gives me a lecture on how hard it is to do, I have already stripped the unit apart to put in a larger hard drive so I've been there AND it still works too!

In the process of doing this I thought I might put in a DVR (Pioneer DVR-110) drive rather than the Combo drive but looking at the optical drive it looked "different". Is this drive special for this iMac? Can I put whatever optical drive in I wish? I would like to do it but I don't want to disassemble and reassemble the iMac too many times for no reason.

Feedback would be appreciated.

www.xlr8yourmac.com to the rescue.

Read this article ...

There is a paragraph that talks about the Optical drive tray bezel.

Also check out the database reports on iMac G4 owners who have replaced their optical drives.

Hopefully in your experiences, you've reapplied the thermal paste where comes off when the bottom casing is removed. Otherwise, over time, the unit will overheat and require a new logic board.
